Former two time lightweight world champion Jose Luis Castillo informed the media that for the time being he is taken a step back from the boxing world.
Castillo had his last bout in January of this year when he stopped unknown James Wayka in two rounds. Since that bout, he has not stepped foot inside a boxing gym.
Castillo makes his home in Mexicali, MX, but often visits the city of his birth, Empalme.
“El Temible” Castillo has stated that he has received numerous offers to return to the ring but has rejected all of them. As of the moment, Castillo is part of Zanfer Promotions which is helmed by Fernando Beltran.
Jose Luis also commented that in a few weeks he will make the decision of ending his 57-9-1, 49KO career or going forward towards one more run for a title.
He earned his first title in 2000 when he captured the WBC lightweight strap by defeating Stevie Johnson in Bell Gardens, CA. Floyd Mayweather Jr. dethroned him in a close fight but recaptured it in 2004 in a twelve round decision over Juan Lazcano in Las Vegas.
His two bouts against the late Diego “Chico” Corrales will always be remembered and their first bout is considered the best fight in the last twenty years if not ever.
“If I do comeback it will be to go after another lightweight title or a junior welterweight belt,” the ex-wrold champ concluded.
