Numerous media outlets are reporting the exciting young Golden Boy fighter James Kirkland was sentenced today for his guilty plea on gun possession by a convicted felon. He plead guilty to the charge in July of this year and was arrested in April. His sentence is two years in prison in his hometown of Austin, Texas.
Kirkland can get credit for the six months he has already served and could also get off early for good behavior. His attorney/co-manager Michael Miller estimates he could be out by June 2010 but he could be in a half-way house sooner and training for his next fight.
Word is the judge went a little light on James due to the large number of people who have supported him in recent months.
Kirkland had allegedly been robbed at gun point earlier this year and sought to buy a firearm for protection. However, as a convicted felon from a 2003 armed robbery offense, you are prohibited from possessing a firearm and the ATF saw him give his girlfriend money to buy a piece at a gun show in April. He was arrested and a promising career went in limbo. Kirkland, the 25 year old, has to feel a little lucky and hopefully he will get out and turn his life around. Oscar has vowed to put him under his wing.
Its too bad this kid had some talent, why waste it…..Hopefully he can think about what he wants too acheive and come out a different man, and some serious council. Everybody deserve a second chance.
I’m sorry
