Erik Morales is the last man to have beaten Manny Pacquiao and will always be remembered as a warrior despite his recent loss to the younger Danny Garcia on Saturday night at the Reliant Arena in Houston, TX.
Morales was trying to box rather than to brawl in the early rounds. After the ninth round Morales’ trainer and father Jose Morales told his son that he needed a knockout to win because Garcia was ahead. Sr. Morales knew this because Texas allows open scorecards.
“El Terrible” tried to put the pressure only to get clocked with a left hook in the 11th round that sent Morales sprawling to the canvas. Morales beat the count but there wasn’t much he could have done, losing 118-111, 117-110 and 116-112 on the scorecards.
“I have a lot of things to think about, I truly have to think about it,” Morales said when asked about his future in the ring. “First of all, it’s my health but I have to think about it. To take fights at this level against these types of opponents, it really affects my health.”
I will personally remember Morales as one of the greatest Mexican fighters who gave us epic fights against Marco Antonio Barrera, Manny Pacquiao and many other sensational wars rather than a stepping stone for the up and coming. With that being said, I hope the International Boxing Hall of Famer hangs them up.
I have to agree with you guys 100%. Morales is one of the greatest and should be remembered as such, I dont want to see him used as a stepping stone for these younger guys. He has done his job and is one of the best ever in the game of boxing. All warrior, all heart, a true champion with class.
I agree Edgar, to see one of my favorite fighters of all time look so out of it and struggling with a kid he would have easily dominated a few years ago was a bit difficult to watch at points. Yes I hope Morales does indeed hang them up he does not need to prove anything anymore.
