A few months ago we announced that Kelly Pavlik might be fighting on the under card of Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley which is taking place on May 7 at the MGM grand in Las Vegas. Top Rank has officially announced that the kid from Youngstown, Ohio, will take on Alfonso Lopez in a scheduled 10-round, 168 pound super middleweight fight.
Pavlik (36-2, 32 KOs), 28, has been at the Betty Ford Center for treatment for alcohol abuse and has not fought since losing to Sergio Martinez last April. He also pulled out from fighting Paul Williams twice due to a staph infection on his left hand.
Since leaving rehab in January, Pavlik has been training in his home town with his longtime trainer, Jack Loew.
Lopez (21-0, 16 KOs), from Cut and Shoot, Texas, who has won five of his last seven bouts by knockout, boasts an impressive victory by knockout percentage of 76%. Known for his heavy hands and excellent ring savvy, Lopez returns to the ring fresh from knocking out Romero Johnson to capture the vacant WBC Continental Americas super middleweight title. In paper Lopez has a perfect record but Pavlik will represent his most notable opponent by far.
Pavlik is going to smoke this guy. Lopez was picked to make Kelly look good so that Arum can match him up with Bute:
Alright glad to see that Pavlik will be fighting again. Hopefully he stays clean and sober and the new weight works out for him. Good luck to him in this fight hopefully he can get back to his winning ways in this fight.
