When I first heard of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the first thing that came to my head was boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. Like many boxing fans, I was excited to see what Jr. was going to bring in the ring.

Would the apple fall far from the tree? Would he inherit his father’s talent? Every time I watched Chavez Sr. with my father growing up, we’d literally get goose bumps. Chavez Sr. was a pressure fighter with a deep well of offensive and defensive maneuvers who went to war in every single fight and never came out of it with so much as a scratch on him (until his 96th fight) and had an inside attack that is still being studied by trainers all over the world.

Chavez Jr. is ranked #1 by the WBC despite his unfamiliarity with top tier fighters. Having such a strong and prominent name, there comes a price to pay. Chavez Jr. is only 25 years old and already has a perfect record of 44-0. What I don’t understand is why Chavez Jr. has some critics doubting him. Bart Barry, a writer for 15rounds.com, said many fans refer to the son as a “fresa,” or someone who is soft, a child of privilege. Critics say he has only fought ” taxi drivers, bum fighters”. I have to admit the only fight I can remember him fighting was against John Duddy. But, why blame the kid for his fights?

Unless he’s the one choosing his opponents, with all due respect to his whole team, I think its “time to cut the umbilical cord” and let the Jr. fight bigger names!

If Chavez Jr. defeats Zbik, Sergio Martinez has already expressed interest to fight Chavez Jr. and if Jr. refuses, Martinez will start a petition with the WBC to have Chavez Jr.’s belt stripped. If that fight ever does happen, I would be praying the whole time and not for Martinez because his face would be flawless. Other great names waiting in line are: Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto. Bob Arum has stated considering putting Cotto against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The fight would be for Chavez’s WBC middleweight (160 lbs) world championship belt, assuming Chavez beats Sebastian Zbik.

Let’s just focus on June 4th and see what the outcome will be. I’m hoping Chavez Jr. wins by way of KO, I’ll predict by 9th RD because from watching Zbik’s fights on youtube, he is not a puncher. If Chavez Jr does win, he’s one step closer to proving his critics wrong and start fighting “BIG BOYS”.

Chavez Jr. is aware of being blessed and cursed living in his father’s name, “It’s not a burden,” Chavez Jr. said. “It’s a very beautiful thing because a lot of people who used to love my father now love me. I want to become a world champion. That way I can gain the love of the fans completely.”

  1. @ EZ,
You’re absolutely right. The only thing I take issue with regarding Hopkins->Pascal->Dawson, etc is that Dawson lost to Pascal. Hopkins went home with a very controversial draw. Yes, history was at stake…and made. I think the people wanted to see a rematch with Hopkins more than a rematch with Dawson. Let’s not forget the arena was sold out. I really don’t think a fight vs Dawson would sell out. That’s just my opinion of course. Making Dawson the mandatory challenger is as silly as when Chavez Sr was made the mandatory challenger vs Kostya Tszyu. Or this Ryan Rhodes guy against Canelo. Anyway, Hopkins will be made a super champion type if Chavez trys his luck in that division. This kid will be protected at all costs. I’m glad Martinez is planning to make a big stink of things should Chavez win and avoids him.

  2. Aby and friends, I wouldn’t have any problems with Chavez Jr if he would’ve had fought his way at least into the TOP TEN, but he hasn’t and I’m sure we can all name at least TWENTY 154/160Lb’ers that Chavez Jr can’t defeat if he would dare fight them. What the WBC/Suliaman did in his efforts to make Jr and Canelo Alvarez “champs” is only part of what’s wrong with boxing, although nothing that surprises us. I along with most of you all EXPECTED this a long time ago. IT BOTHERS ME!!

But it’s not only Chavez Jr and Canelo nor WBC/Suliaman. We can safely add Bernard Hopkins/GBP/Richard Schaefer to the list. Here’s why: Chad Dawson was Pascal’s mandatory challenger and accepted to ‘step aside’ and allow Hopkins to get another shot at Pascal and to make history, sort of. (It’s no too hard to make “history” in this era with so many “titles” available, right??) Well, it was agreed that the Hopkins would face Dawson next if he won. Hopkins agreed, Dawson agreed, Golden Boy Promotions Promoter Richard Schaefer agreed and it was announced as such on most all boxing sites. BUT… now the GBP ‘posse” have now announced to ESPN’s Dan Rafeal that they will seek a LOOPHOLE in the agreement to allow Hopkins to get out of the agreement and FIGHT SOMEONE ELSE!! I don’t now about you folks but THIS BOTHERS ME!!

Remember that this is a WBC belt that we are talking about which means that Suliaman will make a decision which is to HIS/WBC’$ be$t intere$t, for sure. He will probably automatically make Hopkins a SUPER Champion or some kind of Super Duper Emeritus Champion despite the fact just recently won the title. Will ANYTHING that stop Suliaman? HELL NO!! Will it stop the GPB “posse”?? HELL NO, especially with Don Jose’s “blessings”. (Pardon me while I puke)

We can/could/should freely and SADLY admit that boxing has become more and more a sport similar to a WWE circus but with LESS credibility. IT BOTHERS ME!!

Yes, it bothers me because I was born into this sport some 60 years ago, come from a boxing family of trainers, managers, pro fighters… At the dinner table “Silence Was Golden” as the saying goes. The ONLY topic permitted to talk about was BOXING. Not politics, not the weather nor religion, ONLY BOXING!! I still remember being a 7 or 8 year old and attending fights in the small fight clubs of Puerto Rico then later to New York’s St Nick’s Arena, The old Madison Sq Garden and Sunnyside Gardens. Also my unforgettable experiences of traveling with a carload of hungry fighters to Philly’s legendary Blue Horizon Arena or the Cambria Club, or to the Syracuse Memorial Auditorium and to the New Jersey, Massachusetts, Washington D C, Maine and New England fight clubs of Totowa, Provedence, Worchester, Springfield, Wapole, Boston, Portland, Bangor.. among others.

Yes, IT BOTHERS ME!! Will it change?? Well… actually yes, it will GET WORSE!! And THAT bothers me even MORE!!

    Saludos to all!!

  3. This kid is basicly being gromed into another mayweather only without all the skills. Sit on the zero, fight a bunch of nobodys and wait for the big payday. At least Floyd fought a few good fighters. Chaves has never fought anyone of any relevance. Plain and simple this kid needs to take on better fighters and stop avoiding the bigger names. It doesnt matter if its him or his ppl this crap needs to stop, there’s to much of this shit in boxing starting with Floyd Mayweather and ending with Canelo. There’s to many wanttobies out there with either no heart or bad management. Noone wants to earn things anymore, these ppl think they can minipulate their way to the top but the problem is you cant fool the real boxing fans and fony champs get exposed. Boxing is turning into nothing more than just another buisness and the sport is being ruined. Money issues has corrupted every major sport and I think boxing is one of the worst. Boxing is my favorite sport but its turning to shit because of money grubbing promoters, fighters, and networks. Everyone wants the money, the titles and the glory without doing what it takes to earn it. Its sad that these young kats are being carried along and being made to look like something their not. Its also sad that fools like Floyd Mayweather are being alowed to minipulate the game and actually has some dumb f–ks out their thinking about paying him that rediculous amount of money. If they pay him that money they’re beyond stupid. If it was me I’d tell him to go screw himself and stick his zero up his funky ass.

  4. @ Jonny-Boy,
I’ve been sayting the same thing for a few years now. Chavez should step it up and fight ranked fighters. If he does win the title I hope he fights Martinez or a unification fight versus Felix Sturm. I remember seeing an interview by the Mexican commentators with Miguel Cotto after he beat Mayorga. Chavez was a guest commentator and during the interview Cotto challenged Chavez to his face saying that since they both have the same promoter it should be an easy fight to make. To which Chavez never said “Let’s do it”. We all know that promoters and managers make fights but at the very least he could have said, ” hell yeah let’s fight ” or anything to that effect. Instead he avoided any direct answer.
Same goes for Canelo Alvarez. Cotto should get a shot at Canelo to see what trhis kid is REALLY made of besides the hype and popularity.

  5. Listen the WBC should be ashamed of themselves Just for Ranking this clown #1
He will never be a man Look at him he belongs in a baby crib.

I’m Sorry get Him the Hell outta Here. He needs to get knocked out I don’t care who his father is.

  6. This kid deserves a pounding from Martinez if not at least one from Cotto and I hope he gets it, he doesn’t fight the big boys because he can’t hang with them. As I’ve said over and over he’s nothing special he lacks commitment, and i’m willing to bet he lacks the heart of a champ because he’s never taken a really serious fight and stepping up from Zbik (who?) to Martinez (if he doesn’t come down with a “fever” or “injury”) he will quit unless he gets knocked out first. I tried to like this kid as I also grew up watching Sr. myself, I had to give his son a chance but bum after bum it got tiresome he’s proved nothing as pointed out his biggest win is over Duddy in 44 pro bouts that shows how serious he is taking his career so why should we bother? The only thing I can say if he does fight Martinez at least he will actually man up for once but I don’t see that ending well for him. If he knocks out Zbik impressively (and I don’t give that much of a shot) than I’ll actually pay attention to his next fight but if he looks horrible and tired on a way to decision than I’ll only bother watching him if he fights Martinez or Cotto just to watch him get exposed.
