I told you Sergio Martinez would win!

On my last article I told you to bet on Sergio Martinez to win over Kelly Pavlik.

Martinez (45-2-2, 23 KOs) moved up in weight taking on Kelly Pavlik 36-2, 32 KOs) who weighed 178 lbs. while Martinez weighed just 167 lbs. on Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Though Pavlik had the weight advantage, Martinez was just too fast for the kid from Youngstown, Ohio.

Pavlik won the middle rounds scoring a flash knockdown against an off balanced Martinez in round seven but Martinez was in command from the ninth round on, busting Pavlik’s right eye which his cut man couldn’t stop the bleeding. The Argentinean began letting his hands go and was cracking Pavlik with three- and four-punch combination that landed before the champion could react.

It took 36 stitches to close the cuts around Pavlik’s eyes, his face was a bloody mess when the bout ended. Martinez won by scores of 115-111, 116-111 and 115-112. There’s no doubt Martinez is one of the best-conditioned fighters in the game especially now that he holds the interim 154-pound belt. Because there was a rematch clause in the contract expect to see Martinez-Pavlik II.

“In the last third of the fight, around the eighth or ninth round, he began touching me a lot,” said Pavlik, who did not attend the post-fight news conference. “… I couldn’t see out of my right eye after he cut it in the eighth or the ninth. I couldn’t see his left. I wasn’t hurt, but he just hit me with a good volume of punches.”

    i’m with you guys on all that, martinez fought a great fight. there is no ? he beat pavlik. I also believe he beat williams, paul aint fooling anyone with that pitty pat B/S. He throws a lot of punches but does no damage.

What a great fight by Sergio Martinez, I also want to see Martinez Williams 2, I think he dominated Pavlik and to me Pavlik was winning 2 or 3 rounds when HBO commentators were saying it was en even fight, the second cut really helped him to get back on track because Pavlik was landing more on those rounds and had the chance of turning it around in the later rounds.
    Great fight for Martinez, he should be 3 and 0 in his last 3 fights, he was robed twice.
