In a highly anticipated super flyweight unification bout, Vic Darchinyan (30-1-1, 24 KOs) promised to knock out Cristian Mijares (36-3-2, 14 KOs) from Durango, Mexico. Darchinyan kept his promise by dominating and then knocking out Cristian Mijares with a spectacular ninth round KO Saturday night at the Home Depot in Carson, California.
“To all the media writers, I told you…I kept my promise,” said Darchinyan during the post fight press conference.
Lou DiBella also showed he to could keep a promise and hugged and congratulated Darchinyan for his amazing performance. “He kept his promise and he earns our respect,” stated DiBella, “but we will be back.”
Darchinyan dominated Mijares thru out the rounds landing his famous overhand left and uppercuts. As the bout progressed, Mijares seemed unable to figure out Darchinyan’s awkward style.
“Mijares is a great Mexican boxer, he proved that tonight,” stated Gary Shaw.
“What can I say, I couldn’t find his style. He is a strong fighter, I compliment him,” said Mijares of the now undisputed super flyweight champion. “I am not here to make excuses, I fought like a Mexican and fought with my balls and not my head.”
“For me boxing is not for the money… of course money is important but is about being recognized, I want my kid to be recognized as the son of a legend or a world champion for me that’s priceless,” stated the new IBF, WBA and WBC champion. Armenia’s Vic Darchinyan became the division’s first-ever three-belt world champion.
“Mijares is good fighter, it wasn’t easy. I want to fight the best and I want to collect all the belts and Fernando Montiel I want you next,” proclaimed Darchinyan. “If I fight Montiel he will retire after I am done with him.”
“I lost, I fell and I got up and I will take a rematch any day, but for now I just want to relax and recover,” said Mijares to end the post fight conference.
Gary Shaw Productions, DiBella Entertainment and KO Entertainment promoted Mijares vs. Darchinyan, in association with Corona.
