WBC lightweight champion Humberto “Zorrita” Soto (55-7-2, 32KOs) is currently training in the mountains of Temoaya, Mexico, for his upcoming title defense against Japan’s Tomoki Sasaki (36-8-1, 23KOs). Sasaki, 35, is currently the OPBF titleholder at 140.
The fight is schedule for June 25 which will be televised by Televisa.
This will be Soto’s first fight since leaving Top Rank. Soto was supposed to take on Urbano Antillon in a rematch as part the undercard for Pacquiao-Mosley but that was cancelled due to some financial issues with Top Rank which forced the Los Mochis, MX, resident to part ways from Top Rank and Mexican Promoter Fernando Beltran.
Humberto Soto’s attorney and co-manager, Michael Miller, is also in a fight against Fernando Beltran. Beltran filed a lawsuit against Miller for libel and defamation. Beltran alleges that Miller made several false accusations against him to the media and is seeking damages. Miller said besides Soto being underpaid on his minimum purses, Beltran sometimes paid him in installments and sometimes using cash on the money he did receive and other times the check bounced.
Soto is currently a free agent and is hoping Gary Shaw, Lou DiBella or Golden Boy might be interested in picking him up. Without a big promoter behind Soto, it will be hard for him to get any exposure. On the same night of June 25 there are several boxing fights. HBO is airing Devon Alexander vs. Lucas Matthysse. There’s also Felix Sturm vs Matthew Macklin and welterweight Mike Jones is also fighting.
Let’s just hope “Zorrita” made the right move by leaving Top Rank.
I was hoping we’d get the Soto vs Urbano Antillon rematch but Soto deserves an easier fight this time around. No complaints. Props to Antillon for taking on Brandon Rios in his first fight since that unforgettable WAR versus Soto. Hopefully we will get the rematch later on down the line. It’s a ‘natural’, a fight that we ALL wanna see!!
I’m sure any of those promoters will sign Soto it would be dumb not to, the man is a warrior.
