If a fighter is interested in growing his brand, building his fan base, and taking advantage of any exposure, follow the footsteps of a fighter like Gabriel Rosado. Rosado, 20W-5L with 12 KO’s, turned in an impressive and exciting performance in front of a sold out crowd and on national television against the very good southpaw, Sechew Powell. Powell, who replaced Joel Julio, made Rosado earn his win. In seven very close rounds, Rosado slowly became more comfortable in the ring, figuring out his opponent. Powell, who fought a composed, smart, slick fight was able to thwart many attacks of Rosado and was up on BJ Flores’ and Freddie Roach’s unofficial scorecards. In round 8, Rosado, who had started slipping punches with beautiful upper body movement and timing, was able to capitalize and several hard punches. Although he looked as though he almost punched himself out, Rosado took a second, allowed the round to end, and resumed his final attack in the ninth, eventually knocking out Powell.
The important notes taken from this fight is that a technical fight can be an entertaining one. The early rounds showed a lot of thinking, planning, and tactical exchanges. Because of the nature of the exchanges, the risks tried and taken, it brought mystery to the fight. After the feeling out was done and the fighters got in their grooves, bigger risks were taken and hard shots were landed. King Gabriel Rosado was able to show his killer instinct and finish off another tough contender under the lights, again.
Another great takeaway is that losses on a record do not kill a career. The coveted “0” is important, but the greatest fighters of all time have lost, come back and shown that one is a champion. Yes, it is better if a fighter wins all of their fights, but a star can be created without being undefeated.
