Rumors are circulating the internet that former two weight world champion Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton is returning to the ring in 2010 in a major outdoor event against Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez. Hatton Promotions chief executive, Gareth Williams told the Daily Express in the UK: “If Ricky does carry on it would be an ideal fight for him to take on Marquez. He is an elite fighter, just like Ricky, who will want to challenge the best. It makes far more sense to fight Marquez than some of the other names that have been mentioned.”
Marquez during a recent interview on a Mexican radio station, made it clear that a third bout with Pacquiao is the fight he wants. If and only if, he can’t get a fight with Pacquiao – he will consider a fight with Ricky Hatton. Juan Manuel Marquez fought a controversial draw in 2004 and then Marquez lost a controversial split decision to Manny Pacquiao in 2008.
“The first choice for me is Manny Pacquiao, but I know they are going to negotiate with Floyd Mayweather. But if it doesn’t happen, then I want a fight with him. If the (Pacquiao) fight doesn’t happen, I will consider a possible bid to go to England to fight against Ricky Hatton, and then a third fight with Manny could be even bigger,” Marquez stated.
Juan Marquez vs. Ricky Hatton most likely will take place in England in the first quarter of 2010. Both of those fighters are promoted by Golden Boy.
