The #1 WBC ranked super bantamweight Jhonny Gonzalez promised to conquer the green belt when he faces the Japanese champion Toshiaki Nishioka in Monterey, MX, on May 23rd.
Gonzalez, who was the WBO bantamweight champion assured to the Mexican daily Diario de Mexico “I will be very prepared for this fight which will be very tough but I can confirm that I will defeat Nishioka.”
At a recent press conference, Gonzalez thanked the promotional company Kulche who won the purse bid so that the bout could take place in Mexico.
“I am thankful that the fight is taking place in Mexico but at the same time if I had to go to Japan to win it, I would,I am not afraid to fight anywhere in the world.”
“He is a strong fighter, he comes forward, he is very fast and a southpaw,” Gonzalez after confirming that he has seen video of his next opponent. “I must have a great camp. I don’t want to brag but I think I have a great style against southpaws and I find it easier to face them.”
Jose Sulaiman, President of the WBC, stated that although the signed contracts have not been received from the world champion, Mr. Honda who is Nishioka’s promoter gave his word that the fight will take place.
Ex world champion Rafael Marquez is also slated to appear on the May 23rd fight card marking his first bout since his historic and now legendary trilogy against Israel Marquez. Marquez will be facing Jose Mendoza of Columbia.
