VIDEO: When will his son fight “Pacman”?
When will Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao finally face off in the ring?
Will the mega match of “Money” vs. “Pacman” ever really happen?
I caught up with Floyd Mayweather Sr., the patriarch of the pound-for-pound kingpin, at this week’s World Boxing Council (WBC) 49th World Convention in Las Vegas and asked him these questions.
The boxing trainer (who never shies away from giving an opinion) had a little something to say about the clash everyone wants to see. As the father of Floyd Jr., this former prizefighter is known for his colorful “poetry” as a rhyme master–and for his family drama.
Floyd Sr. and Floyd Jr. have had their share of emotional squabbles as they were even seen tangling on the HBO “24/7” series.
Rivaling the Kardashians, controversy seems to follow this family every step of the way. But the Mayweathers, along with Roger Mayweather Jeff Mayweather, are a boxing dynasty. The sweet science is their profession–and business has been great for this tribe.
The star of the show, WBC Welterweight Champion Floyd Jr., is slated to fight on May 5 at the MGM Grand.
But who will he fight? Will Mayweather Promotions and Top Rank ever ink a superstar collision between Floyd and Manny?
There have been an onslaught of names thrown in the ring about who Mayweather Jr.’s opponent will be. Everyone from Erik Morales to Canelo to a rematch with Victor Ortiz has been bandied about. Marcos Maidana, Sergio Martinez, Robert Guerrero, Amir Khan and any other slugger within 20 pounds of the flashy boxer say they are willing to fight him. The payday and the world-wide spotlight should make this the most lucrative bout of 2012.
But most of the boxing universe wants Manny Pacquiao to be the chosen foe.
Hear what Floyd Sr. told me about this matchup during the WBC Champions Gala at the Mandalay Bay. I went over to say hello to him with Las Vegas’ own Butch Gottlieb. Mayweather Sr. was seated at a table with other boxing luminaries including Chicago’s Yui Lee, a female boxing judge, and her sister.
During our chat, the outgoing Floyd Sr. spoke about Team Pacquiao. The ex-welterweight prizefighter and boxing coach always has something to say–in his own unique way.
Here he blasts rival trainer and Hall of Famer Freddie Roach (whom he calls the “Joke Coach Roach”) in one of his classic rhymes. He also says his son will fight the Filipino icon when Manny agrees to “take the test” for PED (performance-enhancing drugs).
“If Manny takes the ‘test’ my son will put him to rest,” Mayweather Sr. says, “and all the rest you know is no contest, I must confess!”
He is a rhyming machine.
Ladies and gentleman, the one and only Floyd Mayweather Sr.!

As irritating as the Mayweather’s are, and as much as I’d enjoy seeing “Money” get whipped in the ring, there still isn’t anyone out there, right now, that can beat Floyd. And that includes Pacquiao.
