Joe FrazierJoe Frazier passed away yesterday the Hall of Fame heavyweight and Olympic gold medalist dies after battle with liver cancer. Most people will remember Joe for his trilogy of fights with Ali, he beat Muhammad Ali in the Fight of the Century, battled him nearly to the death in the Thrilla in Manila. He knocked Ali down in the 15th round at the Madison Square Garden in 1971.

Frazier’s death was announced in a statement by his family, who asked to be able to grieve privately and said they would announce “our father’s homecoming celebration” as soon as possible.

On Twitter late Tuesday after hearing of Frazier’s death, Mayweather tweeted, “My condolences go out to the family of the late great Joe Frazier. #TheMoneyTeam will pay for his Funeral services.”

Mayweather has committed to such a gesture before, earlier this year paying for the funeral of a one-time opponent, former world champion Genaro Hernandez. Those interested, can click here for more details on the generous funeral proceedings.

Frazier, who died at 67, had struggled financially after his boxing career ended. So this is a huge help by Mayweather. Many don’t like Mayweather for his cockiness, but you have to admit he has a big heart, I don’t see that many people stepping up like he has.

“Smokin’ Joe was only diagnosed last month with the disease and spent his last days in a hospice in Philadelphia. A 10-count will be performed in memory of the great 1964 U.S. Olympic gold medalist from Philadelphia.

MyBoxingFans.com staff sends sympathies to the Frazier family and may he R.I.P.

  1. Well as a person that grewup with Mayweather’s mom, I am not surprised of this act. Mike Tyson lived in Catskil NY next to Hudson. Look at his generosity, the area we grew up in makes all the differance is a persons personality.
Good Job Mayweather Gini raised 2 great daughters and a good son.

  2. As I’ve said before, Floyd is certainly not my favorite fighter and I don’t like his “Money” persona or his antics but I do respect him as a person and this shows why. Good on you Floyd, and R.I.P. Smokin’ Joe.
