Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s fourth-round knockout of Victor Ortiz to reclaim a welterweight title on Sept. 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas generated 1.25 million buys and $78.440, 000 million in domestic pay-per-view revenue, Golden Boy Promotions announced Friday.
These numbers make the event the second highest grossing non-heavyweight pay-per-view event of all time. Mayweather has now appeared in the three biggest non-heavyweight pay-per-view events in the sport’s history, including Mayweather vs. Oscar de la Hoya ($136,853,700), Mayweather vs. Ortiz ($78,440,000 million) and Mayweather vs. Sugar Shane Mosley ($78,330,000 million).

“My motto is ‘hard work and dedication’ and I have shown this throughout my entire career, which has allowed me to go out and perform each time I step in the ring,” said Mayweather. “I give the fans everything I have with the best competition and exciting fights. I must be doing something right as they keep buying my fights and I appreciate their tremendous support. It feels good to be able to generate such a great interest in the sport.”

Mayweather’s other blockbuster pay-per-views include Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez in 2009 (1.1 million).

“Every time Floyd steps into the ring, he reminds us that he is the greatest fighter in the sport today and certainly its biggest star,” Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s longtime adviser and the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, said. “The financial success of his fight with Victor Ortiz reinforces Floyd’s position in the sport as iconic and he should be appreciated for bringing all of this attention and good fortune to the sport. His pay-per-view success is staggering and the history books will reflect this impact.”

  1. Great. Now Floyd will continue to duck Pac… If he can make this much coin without facing the guy with the best chance of beating him, he will never agree to that fight.

  2. If Ortiz could’ve kept his cool and not thrown that head but it could have been a good fight. The kid could have had a chance, he didnt land alot but he did land a few nice punches that Floyd wasnt smiling at. No one knows what could have happend in the later rounds, If I had a quarter for every time there was an up set in boxing I,d be a rich man.

Back in the day I would have agreed with you on that Edgar because I do watch this clowns fights to see him lose, but not anymore. Mayflower is out of options, he cant minipulate the game anymore. Who is he going to fight now? Berto, Bradly, Alexander please! the best sounding one is Berto and I wouldnt pay for that at this point. The only reason I pitched in on the last fight was cuz some old friends came to visit and wanted to watch it so I lost 20 bucks so what. Mayflowers success is his worst enemy like I said a long time ago. These are the fights I would watch Pacquiao, Cotto, Martinez, I might even watch a mayflower vs margarito. Floyd will never take these fights and at his age he cant afford to keep taking 2 year vacas. So he might as well go away just retire and save himself the imbarresment of being called a coward for the rest of his career. Because thats exactly what he is a sad excuse for a champion a succer punching, bullet dodging, no class having, second rate champ. In my book he will forever be known as “The saddest story in boxing”. Bottom line; Floyd Mayflowers days are numbered and he can go fuck himself.

  3. But I bet if Floyd will fight again, we will pay again to watch him fight lol. we pay in hopes to see him get his ass kicked.

  4. All that means is we the fans threw away alot money to watch two grown children act like idots. What a waste of money.
