1247693437On Tuesday Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez hosted a telephone conference call to address the media about their mega-fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas scheduled for September 19, 2009.  The fight, which was originally slated to take place July 18th, was postponed due to a rib injury sustained by Mayweather Jr.

The number one question every one wanted to know was how Floyd Mayweather Jr. injured himself. Floyd was being Floyd and refused to answer the question.

“I got hurt in training and I’ll leave it at that,” stated Mayweather. Many of the media got upset that he kept ducking the question.

When questioned about the weight, which Mayweather cryptically avoided, other than to say it would be a welterweight fight. Marquez’s answer was similar.

“There’s an agreement between us. Anything over 140 pounds is considered welterweight. We’ll see. We have an agreement. Like I said before, anything over 140 is welterweight.”

De La Hoya, who as President of Golden Boy Promotions was also present, added, “Everybody wants to know what the weight is. The whole world is going to be tuning in. Watch Friday night to see at what weight it will be.”

I don’t understand why they will not disclose the actual weight. In boxing weight makes a big difference, take Miguel Cotto for example, he refuses to fight Pacquiao at 143lbs and vice-versa, Pacquiao refuses to fight Cotto at 145lbs. By them refusing to reveal the weight makes you wonder who’s benefiting, Marquez or Mayweather.

Oscar finished the call by hyping up the card: “I’m not going to name names, but I can ensure you one thing. The whole card from top to bottom will be exciting, will be for a world title and will be significant. I wanted to make sure that this date is special for boxing. That we put on a tremendous card and start once again the trend that we saw. You are going to be very, very surprised.”

I hate to ruin the surprise, but oh well.  Rocky Juarez vs. Chris John will be featured as the co-main event for the Marquez-Mayweather fight, maybe now they will be able to sell tickets.

  1. Mayweather is mayweather once again. He speaks more for himself. Trying to make himself the best and in throne still. He must remember that he has retired.
