The plans were for unified bantam weight titlist Fernando Montiel to face Nonito Donaire on February 19 on HBO’s “Boxing After Dark,” as they recently came to agreement if both were to win their upcoming fights.
Nonito Donaire (24-1, 16 KOs), a former flyweight titlist and interim junior bantamweight titlist from the Philippines, is moving up to bantamweight to face former title holder Wladimir Sidorenko on Dec. 4 on Top Rank’s “In Harm’s Way” pay-per-view card in Anaheim, Calif.
Montiel was scheduled to fight in Mexico in November on a “Top Rank Live” card (Fox Deportes) but all plans for Montiel have been flushed down the toilet.
Fernando Montiel will now be out for the rest of the year after injuring his leg in a motorcycle accident this weekend. The full details are not clear to what happened. Montiel only mentions his accident through his twitter account.
“Me cai en una moto y me fragmente la tibia y pss un cortadon ya viste vrd. amig@s djenme informarles q lamentablemente sufri un accidente en moto y me hospitalizaron.”
He basically said he fell of his bike and fractured his tibia and was hospitalized. Let’s hope he recovers quickly because I really want to see him face Donaire. I will keep you guys posted as more news develops.
Setbacks to great fights suck. I hope he recovers quickly cuz him and Donaire is gonna be a good one. Im thinking the fight will take place sometime between April and June now. After he recovers he still has to train for the fight.
I hate setbacks to great fights.
