After talks with fellow three time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez went to the wayside, Erik “Terrible” Morales (51-6, 35KOs) has come to terms with KO artist Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27KOs) for Saturday, April 9th, from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV. The bout will be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and it is rumored it will be the for the interim WBA super lightweight belt.

After more than a two year hiatus, Morales of Tijuana, MX, made a comeback early last year and has gone 3-0, 1KO. In his last outing last December, Morales struggled at times to defeat late sub Francisco Lorenzo via unanimous decision in his hometown. Maidana jumped on the boxing radar after stopping Victor Ortiz at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, in what was supposed to be Ortiz’s coming out party. In his last bout, Maidana was in the losing half of 2010′s Fight of the Year when he battled Amir Khan late last year.

The thirty-four year old Morales is in his quest for that coveted fourth titles in as many divisions to become the first Mexican-born fighter to achieve the feat.

  1. Morales was a former champ. He has all the arsenal to negate the power of Maidana. Just remember the first time he fought Pacman (well, it was a different story after that 🙂 ). What I mean is, Morales is an intelligent fighter with a good resume. I’ll go for El Terrible on this one. 😉

  2. Maidana may not be a flashy guy but he certainly has the punching power to wear down Morales and score a late round TKO.

  3. At least he is not dragging out his comeback, this fight will prove if his comeback is the real thing or a figment of his imagination, I like Maidana, but I have family from Zona Norte Callejon 101, so I hope Morales wins or goes out like a warrior that he is.

  4. @ Manny, lol that’s true, I give him this though, he has the heart of a warrior. I just wish he would have picked a lighter punching jr. welterweight. Maybe he see’s something he truly believes he can take advantage of. Just crossing my fingers he doesn’t get messed up, always been one of my fav fighters.

  5. Morales just doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into he’s gonna get hurt. he had the talent to beat Maidana back when he was in his prime but he is way passed that and I feel bad for him but thats all we can do. Hopefully it doesn’t go as bad as I think it will for him.
