Super middleweight Edwin Rodriguez easily defeated Donovan George by a ten-round unanimous decision in the televised co-feature to Martinez-Macklin. Scores read 98-91, 97-93 and 96-94 all for Rodriguez.
Rodriguez outboxed George to win a clear decision. George known as “Da Bomb,” didn’t land many bombs, although George especially tried to land his powerful right hand. But he landed precious few of them. George (22-2-1, 19 KOs), 27, of Chicago, looked frustrated in the later rounds, and in the final two rounds his corner was telling him he needed a knockout to win.
“He didn’t want to fight me,” George said. “I couldn’t catch him. He kept running. He had a game plan and he stuck to it. The game plan was to box and he did a good job. It was like a track meet. I came to fight.”
Rodriguez, working with veteran trainer Ronnie Shields, worked effectively behind a clean jab and a follow-up straight right.
“I feel great, a little tired, but happy,” said Rodriguez, a former U.S. national amateur champion and one of the 168-pound division’s rising talents. “I’ve been with Ronnie, we’ve been working on my defensive game. I think I’m showing another dimension.”
Rodriguez did indeed show another dimension to his boxing game and did what was needed to win this fight and avoided any serious punishment.
