WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (26-2, 20KOs) knocked out former title challenger Miguel “Mickey” Roman (37-10, 28KOs) in the fifth round of a scheduled twelve in the first defense of the title he won from Jorge Linares.

DeMarco who was ahead, 39-37, on all three judge’s scorecards landed a deadly combination to end the contest with only a second to go in the round. Roman face planted on the canvas and couldn’t beat the count.

“I feel like a more mature fighter, a more complete one,” said DeMarco after the fight. “This fight goes to my people of Los Mochis and my grandfather who had a dream to become a world champion and although he wasn’t able to achieve it, I did it for him.”

Brandon Rios vs Richard Abril

After Yuriorkis Gamboa backed out of an April 14 fight set for Mandalay Bay with Brandon Rios. Rios will face Richard Abril for a vacant lightweight title on April 14.

In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas last week, Top Rank seeks at least $1 million in damages against Gamboa. Top Rank claims that Gamboa verbally agreed to the terms of the deal and even received a $70,000 advance on the fighter’s reported $1.1 million take.
