Bernard Hopkins (52-6-2, 32 KOs) lost his title against Chad Dawson (31-1, 18 KOs) on Saturday night at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California. Dawson won by TKO in the second round after Hopkins wasn’t able to continue due to a shoulder injury.

During the second round, Hopkins leaned over the crouching Dawson after throwing an overhand right and Dawson lifted Hopkins off his feet by standing up, pushing him onto the canvas.

Hopkins landed roughly on his back and left shoulder which Hopkins was taken to the California Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles. After being x-rayed and examined by Dr. Sam Thurber, MD, the doctor diagnosed Hopkins with a separation of the acromioclavicular (A-C) joint which connects the collar bone and shoulder blade.

In the fight, Hopkins immediately clutched his shoulder and grimaced in pain apparently unable to continue. Referee Pat Russell ruled there was no foul, therefore the California Commission ruled it a TKO win for Dawson. Dawson accuses the 46-year-old boxing legend Hopkins of faking his injury.

“He jumped on me and was pulling me down, so I pushed him off with the shoulder,” Dawson said. “B-Hop disappointed a lot of fans. I was looking forward to a good fight. I trained eight weeks for this. … Yes, he was faking. This is a fight I wanted for three years and Bernard obviously didn’t want the fight.”

The 29-year-old Dawson said after the fight he wants to finish his business with Jean Pascal and is not interested in a rematch with Hopkins.

What’s your opinion, do you think it should have been a no contest or does Dawson deserve the win?

  1. Dawson got to aggresive and threw B-hop down scooping the leg I might add. I think it was a partial dirty move. The ref messed up by calling that a TKO, it should have been called a no contest. This ruling should be overturned, the way Dawson won this fight couldnt be more lame. terrible ending to a great fight night. The unders cards were very good and then Dawson f–ked it all up.

  2. Pat Russell should have ruled that Hopkins was injured by a non boxing move. That by rule constitutes a no contest. Since the ref called it a TKO then by rule Dawson wins. A lot of people don’t understand that. It was just a domino effect that started with the bad call..
