It was a great night for boxing. Both Showtime and HBO aired great fights to help close out the year. Showtime, who started their second tournament style boxing had bantamweights Vic Darchinyan lose a close split decision to still undefeated Abner Mares. In the main event, Joseph Agbeko decision Yonny Perez.

Darchinyan and Mares split knockdowns, and really put pressure on the normally stalking Darchinyan. Agbeko outboxed Perez. Unlike Showtime’s Super 6, in which it has taken and will take another year for the winner to be decided, this two round bantamweight tournament will have first through fourth place settled by mid next year. Agbeko will fight Mares for the tournament championship and Darchinyan will fight Perez for third place. The first round of this bantamweight tournament was incredible. All tournament contestants fought at the same place on the same night and the fans understand the immediate match ups for the championship. After great performances by all, the final round of the tournament is already highly anticipated. Although Nonito Donaire is moving up in weight and will be fighting dangerous Fernando Montiel, it would be great to see him fight the winner of this tournament.

On HBO, 4 junior welterweight stars collided which resulted in two very competitive decisions. Victor Ortiz and Lamont Peterson fought to a ten round majority draw and Amir Khan beat Marcos Maidana by unanimous decision.

Victor Ortiz still has a good amount of the comeback trail left. Lamont Peterson, a good boxer who can also brawl, jabbed his way to a hard earned draw. Coming back from a 10-7 round in which Peterson was dropped twice, had Ortiz running and on the defensive for the end rounds of the fight. One judge actually had Peterson winning the fight. Had Lamont Peterson never been knocked down or knocked down only once, he would have won the fight.

I was excited to watch Ortiz and Peterson fight. Both are on the road to redemption. Peterson, who lost to Timothy Bradley two fights ago, took advantage of the big opportunity to fight Ortiz. Ortiz, who won four in a row since quitting against Marcos Maidana, finally stepped up his competition by fighting Peterson. Unlike Ortiz’s previous four opponents, Peterson was not over the hill and looking at retirement. Peterson is a young, skilled fighter and Ortiz acknowledged that in prefight talks.

Overall, it was a very exciting fight that did not banish either fighter from 140 contender status. Throughout the fight was saw Ortiz pressure, Peterson pressure, the fighters brawl as well as box. It was a very entertaining fight. Peterson seemed grateful for the draw as Ortiz felt he did enough to win the fight. Had Ortiz left the bicycle at home for one extra round, he could have easily won the fight. Too much running too early in the late rounds of a competitive fight was the catalyst to the majority draw.

It would be great to see both fighters back on HBO. Both have strengths and weaknesses. Both come to fight. The same can be said about Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana, who put on as if not more entertaining a fight.

Amir Khan, a rising Golden Boy star, tested his chin against rugged, hard punching Marcos Maidana. Maidana’s relentless style and punching power put a huge road bump in Khan’s stable mate, Victor Ortiz, a year ago. Khan came out fast, throwing combinations and dancing around Maidana. The hand speed difference was easily noted. Towards the end of the round, Maidana was dropped with a beautiful combination that ended with a hard left to the liver. I’m sure many thought it was over right there.

Maidana beat the count, survived the remaining seconds of the round, went to the corner and recovered. Khan continued to employ his strategy throughout the early rounds, as his combination punching and hand speed gave Maidana difficult time. As the rounds progressed, it was interesting to see Maidana slowly figure out his opponent and begin to land harder, cleaner shots. Towards the late rounds, it was clear Maidana was running close to empty. This was when he caught Khan. Khan was staggered and continually hit throughout the late rounds. Had Maidana not been beaten up so badly early on or had superior conditioning, his style and power would have dropped Khan. Khan survived and won by unanimous decision.

Joe Cortez is a well-known referee, but I felt that his style truly hampered Maidana’s chances and ability to win the fight. Cortez took a point from Maidana for an attempted elbow. Whether it was an elbow for Khan or Cortez, or no elbow at all, that point was without warning and a huge factor in the outcome of the fight. For Maidana to get a point off for the elbow, Khan should have definitely been deducted a point for holding. Maidana, who needed to get in close to hit the taller Khan, was often backed up by Cortez’s demands. Cortez does not allow fighters to fight on the inside, does not let fighters fight out, but separated the boxers with his own hands if they are too close for each other. Boxing on the inside is a skill and a style. Maidana, who could have utilized the inside when Khan was hurt, was either held in a clinch or pushed away by Cortez.

Don’t get me wrong. It is not that I think Cortez was wrong for deducting a point for the elbow, but where was the point deduction for holding? It made no sense to me. Regardless, Khan’s chin was tested; he survived and won.

There are already talks of a Khan-Judah fight in the UK. It’s an interesting fight. Golden Boy would never make this fight, but test Khan’s chin again, let him fight Lucas Matthyse.

Every fighter showed that they are Showtime or HBO worthy and all deserve another prime time spot. It was a great night for boxing and I cannot wait to see how these two weight classes change next year.

  1. and by the way the guy u respect so much pacman is fighting that old guy u wish that retired. so what does that say???? pacman vs mosley is another garbage fight just like pacman vs margo…

  2. ok mr love boxing u wanted me to get my facts straight well here we go. try to keep up ok. you call margo a good match for mayweather but he got ko by mosley. but then u call mosley washed up because floyd made him look horrible in the ring? as a great fighter u call margo he is 1-2 without his wraps. ohh and that one win came against a nobody and lasted 12 rounds against ur great fighter. now u say floyd should of fought pacman when he agreed to wat? pacman never agreed because of the needle situation ummm thats a fact u might wanna look up… now khan won a vacant wba against a guy who was 22-5 lmaoo yea tuff fight there lmaooo. khan doesnt have any good wins under his belt. yea i admit maidana is a power hitter but to sloppy and to slow. what did khan do against him? what he ran most of the fight and got hit so hard he forgot who he was. i dont dislike khan never said that but i dont say he is a beast with wins over nobodys. sorry i need to see more than that.

  3. @bori4life,Floyd needs fight in order for him to claim he is the P4P fighter .He talks about making money .he is ruin the sport with avariciou views .What’s wrong with Making 40 million !
Come on man the guy is seriously damaging the sport
No one says don’t make $ ,yet he has to be reasonable and please the
fans .He fights once a year .Dude ,in my dictionary ,this is not a champ
either he retires,or get real and fight and entertain the fans .Floyd is making a mockery out of himself .
I used to like as a boxer ,but I don’t any more .
As a person I really don’t give care about what he does in his life.Just do us a favor ,Fight or retire .
Manny needs to fight JMM not Mosely .Mosely is at the nadir of his career ;thus, boxing fans don’t need this garbage .
Boxing is getting better and better .Let’s keep it this way .

  4. @bori4life,dude Khan landed way more punches than Maidana.I you don’t like him for any reason that’s your prerogative.
Floyd got no power to KO a fly .Khan is faster ,younger, stronger and accurate.
If they fight, mark my words Khan will punish Floyd without mercy for 12 rounds. He might even knock him out .
Did u see Floyd when took a punch from Mosely .Khan will do it for 12 rounds .
Floyd is a hoax .He is scared to fight any one
he took on JJM a guy who is a division below Floyd’s then he took on old Mosely who should do us a favor and retire because he is making a joke out of himself .
Why Floyd didn’t fight Manny who comply with all Floyd’s demands ?
Floyd got a lot to prove. This is a new era and floyd needs to keep up with it ,or he can retire
enough with the BS man .The man is avoiding any tough opposition such as Margarito,Manny,Cotto….
Khan will take Floyd to school of this era.Floyd just good at talking and cherry picking his opponents .Boxing is getting way better because of boxers like Khan ,Rios,Benavides,Canelo…
The bottom line Floy has to fight if he want to stay in the game ,for he isn’t better than any body else .Dude Fight and grow some balls .
Fight someone is hungry ,ferocious and young .Stop picking your rivals.
Tell me ,why Floyd doesn’t fight Margarito. They both in the same division Margarito is a worthy opponent and has called Floyd many times.Ineluctabely,Floyd is gonna fight ,but we don’t who is the next opponent .I hope he doesn’t fight bums like Mosely .
Khan is only 24 and he is a champ already
do you think that it is easy to become a champ! If you think so ,go ahead and become
one.Come on man get real .The guy just beat
a very tough fighter who Bradely and Alex are
    scared to fight .
get your facts together and get real

  5. how can you call this guy a monster when he hasnt fought anybody? wow he beat the smaller man pauly or a no name fighter maidana who is to slow and to sloppy. yea so lets call chavez jr a legend in the making. i always thought you had to earn respect in this sport i guess for some people u dont. khan will fall aagainst a good fighter. khan beat mayweather lmaooooooo wow i just chocked on my coffee dammm did he impress u that bad with this win lol well khan ran like floyd maybe they can both have a race in the ring. or is it because freddy is training him lol.

  6. Khan is the the star of 2010 in the eyes of many boxing adepts .Who is next for khan
line up the lambs for the slaughter. Hahahahahaha
Want lose go ahead and challenge King Khan
    hahahahaha

  7. The Muslim brother made to the top of boxing.I don’t think that Floyd is going to fight King Khan because he knows that he will be punished badly.Anyhow,Floyd very likely is going to prison for fighting girls hahaha.
All the haters were discombobulated when they saw that Khan is an eminent fighter .
Bradely and Alex are nothing to Khan .

  8. I am so proud that a Muslim brother made it to the top of boxing .Just like Ali,Malik Tyson,Hopkin and a lot more .Let me tell you
Flot won’t even stand a chance against Khan
because doesn’t have the POWER to drop a fly and his speed is reducing ,in addition, his hands are becoming crippled.Khan will punished him badly.
@ j.Marquez, why did you call me names
don’t even now you .I know you would do in front of me because I will shut your mouth .
Cortez took about because maidana threw an ellbow .It was a fair thing to do .it’s not the octagon. You being biased .Anyhow, the Muslim brother shut a lot of mouths with his great performance .Some people can’t hadle it .This is a big celebration for all Muslims it’s a throwback to Ali .I he is not Ali ,but he is a great fighter .
Ortiz quit when fighting maidana he couldn’t take his punches.Maidana said that he was still in pain from the body shot that he took in the first round ;thus, khan possess the power to KO any one down .
At the end,I congratulate King Khan for his great performance .

  9. @bori4life…I don’t even have to write anything down cause u wrote it down for me… Nicely said.! And @ j.Marquez I agree with u on the dork part….lol..

  10. ROB I AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THE REFEREE. I KNEW HE WOULD BE A PROBLEM AS SOON AS I HEARD HIS NAME. I NOTICED THE SAME THING YOU DID. THAT POINT DEDUCTION WAS TOTAL CORTEZ B.S. WHO IS THIS IDIOT THAT DOESNT EVEN USE HIS NAME UNLESS ITS LOVE BOXING, WHAT A DORK.

  11. Guess the guy has a lil better chin then I thought other than that I was not too impressed cuz only saw what we already know he has against a slow slugger.I personally think Mayweather will be too much for Khan regardless of him not having power to KO Khan he would win a clear decision and i’m somebody who really dislikes Mayweather, I just dont think Khan would get it done. If he can great, but I seriously doubt it and seriously doubt we will ever find out.

  12. what is the big deal of this khan guy? what did he proove? he has power and speed ummm we all knew that. that he ran all around the ring threw the second half of the fight lost power didnt know what to do after getiing caught yea great fighter. he ran all around the ring after getting caught. maidana is a sloppy fighter but did enough to expose khan. i didnt see him being good enough to be compared to the elite by beating a sloppy fighter and lasting 12 rounds plus getting hit so hard his knees wanted out the ring while his body wanted to run. im not to impressed with a fighter that runs the whole ring and calls himself elite. gotta do better than that

  13. haters haters haters .hahahahaah .I love when I saw maidana on the floor in agony it give a pleasure which I love .
Khan is man like it or not .
He came to win the 11 round after got caught with fatal shots in the 10 round .This is the definition of a true champion .
Brdaly made excuses not to fight Maidana.
Devon and Alex avoided fighting maidana because they know that they can not handle him .They thought khan will lose against maidana hahahahaha.

    King khan is your daddy

  14. Let me tell you that khan can beat Bradly or Alex easily without a problem .Non of them got power or crazy speed ,so the aftermath is easy to predict .Unremitting punishment from King Khan .

  15. Amir khan easily beat Mayweather for many reasons.Floyd is not as fast he use to be;
moreover, he doesn’t possess power to ko a fly .Khan will punish him without mercy .
Come on Floyd stop being a pussy and fight you coward .Your time is up coward hahahaha.

  16. where are all the haters and doubters of Khan. Some people were so stupid going on u tube and making assertions about khan chin saying without even saying may .Saying we all know amir chin as though were expert in chins .Shut up igonrants. Khan took punches that would put a horse down .
He will unified the titles of the division and go to 147 .
    Go Khan .

  17. Cortez did a great job .He took a point from an idiot and moron who thought he was in the
Octagon throwing his ellbow like stupid .
Maidana is a dirty fighter and arrogant ,but he got punished .
