Last week, Don King Promotions announced that WBA super welterweight champion Puerto Rico’s Daniel Santos (32-3-1, 23KO) had accepted to face the interim WBC belt holder Sergio Martinez (44-1-1, 24KO) of Argentina as part of the triple header planned for February 14th and televised by HBO on a still be determined venue.
Â
The fight card also includes a WBC jr. middleweight elimination bout between ex-champion Ricardo Mayorga (28-7-1, 22KO) and Alfredo Angulo (14-0 11KOs) as well as the double title defense (IBF and WBO) by Nate Campbell (32-5-1, 25KO)Â against Ali Funeka.
Â
But it was recently announced by the Puerto Rican daily “Primera Hora” that Santos did not accept the bout and has asked for his promoter Don King to ensure him a bout in March.
Â
“I have not trained for a month since my fight that was scheduled for January was canceled. I know that only one month to train for this fight in February is not enough,” Santos stated to reporter Carlos Gonzalez of “Primera Hora”. “I am not the type of fighter that would take a fight at the last minute to save a fight card and to make some money. I think I deserve a little bit more than that since I am a three-time world champion… It can be against Martinez or who ever, but I want reasonable time to train. I have been running and I am on my way back to Salinas to train.”
Blah, blah, don’t give me that CRAP Santos. This guy has been under a rock for years now and in the old days 1 month was more than enough. What happened to staying in shape year round?
