Jose Sulaiman and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Growing up, I didn’t live in the best neighborhood. Believe it or not, I lived in the City of Commerce in Los Angeles before moving to Orange County and growing up. I had my share of fist fights and is nothing to be proud of but not once did I ever run to my parents and cry for help. I don’t know if that was a good or bad thing.

All I knew was that if my parents got involved I would probably gotten another beating at school. I know that sounds bad but that’s what happens growing up in bad neighborhoods.

Looking back, it probably wasn’t the smartest choice but now that I have grown up and look back, I kind of understand why you aren’t allowed to get your parents involved because instead of them making you look good, they make you look even worse.

Take for example, Jose Sulaiman, the WBC President, just released a statement saying Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is not scared of Sergio Martinez.

“Yesterday I spent several hours on Twitter and I sensed the negative effects on the Mexican fans produced by press releases of promoters saying that Chavez Jr. will fight against several boxers if he beats Marco Antonio Rubio, which is already a very tough fight. As President of the WBC and close friend of Julio Cesar Chavez Sr and his sons, I wish to emphasize that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is in no way scared of Sergio Martinez. I know Chavez. I know he has the same brave heart just like his father. He’s a great boxer with power in his fists and he’s a Mexican idol, so let’s stop these attacks in regards that he doesn’t want to face his mandatory bout. The bout next February 4th between Julio Cesar and Marco Antonio Rubio will be a great bout full of courage and honor. With all respect to the Mexican fans, I inform you that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has never said that he won’t face Martinez. He has even said that he’s willing to face any boxer because he is a WBC world champion and he will prove it against anybody,” Sulaiman stated.

I understand his trying to protect Chavez but he is making him look like a bitch. Let Chavez do the talking. Better yet, let Chavez fight the mandatory challenger, Sergio Martinez, and prove everyone wrong instead of sending out a press release telling the media to stop saying Chavez is scared.

I guess I still have that mentality of when I was growing up.

What’s your opinion?

  1. Chavez should have said from the get go that he wanted to fight the Rubio because he is the mandatory challenger. Instead he went on to challenge Cotto, a smaller man. Sulaiman and Chavez Sr need to stop acting as press secretaries for JR and let him speak his mind. He might as well challenge Martinez since he knows that fight will not be made. At least not right away.

  2. there’s noting wrong by Losing to a super start like Martinez, Pacquiao or Mayweather. The problem is not willing to take a risk.

Take victor Ortiz, he lost to Mayweather and by trying he got the biggest pay day of his carrier.

I respect those who are willing to try than those who just give up.

  3. I’d rather take a beating for £1000000 than be called a clown,, fact,,,
Can c where junior is coming from though lol!!!!! Martinez will destroy him in a bad way, but still it’s a tidy payday for getting knocked out,,,

  4. No doubt Rubio will be his toughest fight today. But how lame is that his being protected by the WBC, that just showed everyone that the WBC won’t allow Chavez to fight Martinez.

whats next… Bob Arum is going to send out a press release saying to stop Saying Chavez is scared.

    This is boxing… man up!

  5. The old man is protecting his next meal….I totally agree with you. Jr has a lot to prove but if and when he beats Rubio he will shut up a lot of critics. I don’t think he will fight Martinez, we may see him move up to fight Ward instead LOL

  6. This is a great article, since when is it a president of one of the alphabet belts responsibility to defend a fighter. This just show’s where this guy’s head truly is. He never had the intention to try and force Jr. to face Martinez. It’s no secret that Chavez Jr. wants no part of Martinez and he is indeed scared of Martinez. He sounds good at the end of fights saying he wants to fight anybody knowing full well his promoter and Sulaiman will protect him from Martinez. I grew up in East LA and must said I never had anyone fight my battles for me even if it meant I was gonna get beat up or do the beating up. I didn’t grow up with the luxary of “great” parents or other people to look out for me so I had to learn early to look out for myself now I couldn’t be more proud of where I’ve gotten myself because at the end of the day I know it was all me.
