“La Morenasa” Fights THIS Friday
It is not uncommon for prizefighters to want to return to the ring. The passion to lace up burns deep within.
And sometimes those flames keep growing hotter and more urgent until the only choice is to fight once more.
Such is the case of International Female Boxers Association (IFBA) World Lightweight Champion Crystal “La Morenasa” Morales. The popular Oxnard boxer has not fought since 2015 but at just 34 years old (on July 29), this Aztec warrior once to prove that her career in the sweet science is not over just yet.
And now this tough chica will be the main event, THIS Friday, August 21, on the live Rosarito Zona de Impacto event held at Papas & Beer Rosarito (near Tijuana) in Mexico (tickets available at the door, fights start 3:30 p.m).
She will be the featured attraction (opponent to be named soon) at this show that promises to be an entertaining night of fistic action. Rosarito Zona de Impacto is presented by Jibaro’s Boxing Promotions (Raul “Jibaro” Perez) in association with Landeros Boxing Gym, Najera Boxing Promotions (Martha Najera), Sport Tijuana Box and more. There are 15 bouts scheduled on this card.
The athlete/model has stayed busy during the pandemic and promises a memorable night on the canvas for the fans who are looking forward to her comeback. Women’s boxing has become even more prevalent in the last five years so the timing for Crystal’s comeback could be fortuitous for her. Her early mentor was champ Mia St. John (who just announced she will also return to the ring in May 2021). As they say, age is just a number.
Although her critics will crow that it has been five years since the Southern California champ has fought professionally, Morales aims to prove she definitely has some unfinished business in the sport of boxing. Her pro ledger stands at 9-10-1, 2 KOs and the female gladiator hopes to even out her record with a win this Friday.
Training with her father Rafael Morales (La Colonia Youth Boxing Club), Team Morales is looking forward to staying busy in the future. While COVID-19 has put a damper on the majority of live shows, this Rosarito event will be a welcome break for boxing fans in Mexico. As the featured attraction, Crystal proudly represent the 805 area code as she steps back into the limelight with fans in attendance. She loves to fight and wants to put on a great show and a fun fiesta for all.
I caught up with the boxing bombshell as her fight nears. Hear what she has to say about her long-awaited return to the fight game, how the pandemic has changed her and her special message for her loyal followers!
Michele Chong: Hi Crystal! It has been five years since your last fight, what motivated your return to the ring?
Crystal Morales: Hello Michele! I felt like I had unfinished business in this beautiful sport of boxing. I definitely don’t like to stay with, “What if I would have kept on going?” I’m a doer and most importantly, not a quitter!
MC: Who are you training with now and what has it been like for you during the pandemic?
CM: My training during this pandemic has been more of a eye opener to be honest with you. I felt like I was able to focus more on me. Studying myself more and improving in so many ways to become a better version of myself. My trainer right now is my Pops.
MC: You have a large social media following. What can your fans expect on August 21?
CM: My followers are my true boxing riders since day one so I love each and everyone of them. They can expect a more ambitious fighter and a warrior back in the ring. Come on Aug 21st!
