Promoters Don Chargin, Jorge Marron and Bobby DePhilippis have done a superb job in resurrecting the San Diego boxing scene and undefeated California State featherweight champion Chris “SD Kid” Martin (20-0-2, 6KOs) has been a platform for a number of the trio’s events in garnering interest among the city’s shoreline residents.
The “SD Kid” returns to action on Dec. 17th when Golden Boy Promotions in association with Jorge Marron Productions, Bobby D. Presents and Don Chargin Productions present Solo Boxeo Tecate “Path To Glory,” broadcast on Spanish Language Network Telefutura at 11:30pm PT.
In the featured bout of the evening, the 24-year-old Chris Martin, of Chula Vista, CA, a suburb of San Diego, will lock horns with late replacement 28-year-old Yogli “Olafo” Herrera (22-13, 15KOs) of Miami, Florida, by way of San Onofre, Colombia, in a scheduled featherweight eight.
Martin was booked to face veteran Nicky Bentz in the main event before Bentz pulled out of the bout late last week opening the door for Herrera to travel to the shark infested waters of San Diego in hopes of netting one of it’s biggest fish in #9 IBF and #13 WBC ranked Chris “SD Kid” Martin.
Martin has been hot and up to this point enjoyed a fine 2010 that included a mild upset win over SHOWTIME’S treasured project and highly touted prospect Chris Avalos in Martin’s ShoBox debut.
This is a stay busy fight for the promising Martin as he looks forward to a bright 2011 but first he must catch Yogli in his bear-trap in the hopes of sending the Floridian back to his own water front city with fourteen losses on his resume.
In the co-feature, ascending undefeated 20-year-old prospect Ronny Rios (12-0, 6KOs) of Santa Ana, CA, has a rough task ahead of him in perennial tough guy 31-year-old Adolfo “Terror” Landeros (20-16-1, 9KOs) of Hildalgo, MX, in an appointed eight rounds in the featherweight division.
Landeros has a knack for giving rising upstarts all they can handle proving to be a good barometer and Rios will definitely need to be ready with his A-game and prepared to put in a full night’s work as Aldolfo is hard to put away. This fight has fireworks written all over it and promises to be an entertaining affair given the fact that I have never seen Landeros in a bad fight.
In a four round super bantamweight showdown, Christian “Huevo” Bojorquez (1-0) of Chula Vista, CA, will look to defeat Salvador Cifuentes (0-1) also of Chula Vista, with a more definitive victory in a rematch of each man’s pro debut in October.
“Path To Glory” will take place at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Kerny Mesa, CA, a suburb of San Diego. Doors open at 6pm with the first punch thrown at 7pm. For tickets and information please call 619.258.0698
