Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KOs) scored a one-sided ten round unanimous decision over Billy Lyell (22-9, 4 KOs) on Saturday. He drew about 12,000 fans to a soccer stadium in his hometown, Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, where he had not fought since 2006. The scrappy Lyell battled to the end, but Chavez prevailed 99-92, 96-94, 98-92. Chavez retained his WBC silver belt. A couple of weeks ago, the WBC stripped lineal champion Sergio Martinez, elevated Sebastian Zbik from interim titleholder to full titlist and cleared the way for Chavez to challenge Zbik, who probably will travel to Mexico for a defense in May.
Whats more shocking is that they expected better out of him. lol
MANNY L Wow!! Really?? Well.. that goes to show you that even his own fans are pretty much tired of his “cherry picked” opponents. The “he never fought as an amateur” excuse has grown old too. Many fighters, including Wilfredo Vazquez Jr, never had the benefits of an amateur career and other top fighters had only a handful of amateur fights. Now that he has the ultimate set-up fight… can he win?? Is Zbik gonna too tough for him.
Honestly, Zbik can’t punch a lick. He can’t even stop the C-level European fighters with leaky/horrible defenses! He’s stopped only 2 of the last ten unknowns that he has faced.
I saw this coming A LONG TIME AGO and mentioned it on this site quite a few times. He was NEVER gonna fight Cotto, not even Wolak, not ANYBODY that had a decent chance at beating him. Besides, he can’t make the 154Lbs limit anymore without weakening himself. Remember, he was busted and softly “slapped on the wrist” for taking a BANNED SUBSTANCE, supposedly to lose weight. Oh well….
I read in deportes univision that after the fight was over the crowd was booing him cus they were not impressed with his performance……..that’s sad cus he fought in his own home town of culiacan Sinaloa Mex ….. Lol…
@bori4life cause chavez cant hang 12 full rounds but yet he want to be a world champ..
by the way wtf is chavez j.r doin fighting ten rounders????
this will be the only way chavez j.r can become champ. he is a bumb no skills bloaded slow and just suck. now he has a chance to fight for a title with somebody worst than he is. just keep building up his winning record to 90-0 and have him retire.
@ Jesus according to what I read Chavez didn’t wan’t to go train in the Philippines when Roach was training Pac-Man so Cotto decided that he would sit the rest of the year out, but in my honest opinion it wouldn’t have mattered if Roach was training Pac at the Wild Card Chavez would have found a way out cuz as we all know (and i’m sure he knows) Cotto would have torn him apart. Won’t be long I hope till somebody exposes him. Bullshit that he’s fighting for a title though, the hell has he proven?
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KOs). Funny though with a record like this you can’t even KO an unknown guy who already has 9 losses. Jr is full of hype that’s why he really SUCKS to the highest level!!!
Jr should get a new career. He’s ruining BOXING! Damn it!
I still think Cotto would absolutely take Chavez to school. What ever happened to that fight ? Why can’t we see that before Chavez challenges for a world title ? Chavez has not earned the right to a title fight.
Well.. just as I predicted.. the WBC/Suliaman were going to do everything within their power to make Chavez a “champion” of their organization. They suddenly named/made/designated Martinez their “super champ” after only ONE defense!! They now have served on a platter, the weakest link of the 160Lb champions.
I feel bad saying it.. Cuz I really wanna be a fan of jr… But jonny-boy is right……,
There is nothing special at all at Chavez he’s just average not fast and doesn’t have devastating power he won’t go far once he steps up he’ll lose better off sticking to club fighters and journeymen.
