The undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (40-0-1, 30KO) landed in Los Angeles yesterday from Culiacan, MX, and after checking in to his hotel, made his way to the Wild Card Gym to train under Freddie Roach for the first time. They worked out for forty-five minutes.

Chavez Jr. is training for his next opponent, John Duddy (29-1, 18KO) who he faces on June 26th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX, on PPV and promoted by Top Rank.

“I am very motivated. I have been training in Culiacan for three weeks and now I am ready to follow the orders of Roach,” the 24-year-old Chavez Jr. stated. “I consider Roach a great trainer and a great strategist. I know that I will learn a lot and he will help me in my career.”

Chavez Jr. hit the mitts with Freddie Roach for 30 minutes.

“I felt great my day with Roach. I know that we will get along fine and it is only a matter of time,” Chavez Jr. said. The son of a legend also worked out Alex Araiza.

Chavez Jr. will be running in the mornings and training at the Wild Card Gym at 2pm.

Freddie Roach stated that he is happy with Chavez Jr’s performance in their first day together.

“He has a lot of potential as a boxer,” Roach said. “I don’t have a doubt that he will show his best in the four weeks that we have left.”

  1. MANNY L ahhhh…. In my humble opinion, a win over Duddy DOESN’T prove that Chavez Jr is a PPV fighter. It ONLY “proves” that he can beat the likes of John Duddy, who’s no more than a C+ rated fighter himself.

And… yes, the medication found in the Chavez Jr’s urine that brought about his suspension is commonly used for two reasons. To lose weight and… by users who wish to “flush out” evidence of substance use.

And yes, JESUS A, I agree. Chavez Jr has all the right in the world to exploit/milk the Chavez name for ALL it’s worth. It’s HIS name, his father gave it to him, it’s part of his inheritance. I WOULD TOO.

  2. Hey TijuanaBoxing, I think Freddie takes a better punch from CHavez than his previous opponents.
Another thing ” drains your water by elevating urination ” happens to all of us at one time or another. LMAO. No disrespect. I know what you meant…

  3. Tijuana boxing is right , Jr wasn’t taking steroids, wat he took was for making the weight,,,this fight will b a test for him , if he doesn’t win this fight he should retire, cuz ther might not be a future for him if he looses……I sure hope he wins, and proves to us that he deserves to be a ppv fighter

  4. On the first photo up there it looks like Roach is taking a clean shot right to the jaw from Chavez Jr. lol

  5. He tested positive for Diuretics last time he fought in the Pacquiao Vs Cotto under cards, a drug that basically drains your water by elevating urination, it’s the opposite of steroids lol , in other words he was to fat to make weight so he had to loose it somehow since he didn’t do his work in the gym.

Diuretics are very dangerous, it can even kill you.

  6. Chavez wasn’t caught with steroids. He got caught using some other banned substance that is used to hide other banned substances. I seriously doubt he was taking steroids. He fought at 154 lbs in one fight and then couldn’t make 160 lbs two months later. What’s that all about ??

I agree Freddie Roach isn’t God. He can’t turn this kid around in 1 month’s time. It is a good first step in the right direction.
Milk that Chavez name for all it’s worth…Sh*t, I would…

  7. I actually like that Chavez is training with Roach. This kid needed a breath of fresh air away from Culiacan. Freddie will bring out his full potential. I admit that it’s not much to talk about up to now. Chavez has not won an important fight against a top guy. If he beats Duddy and looks good doing it, then he should fight a top ten contender or a former champ. I insist that he needs to look good in victory. I agree that he will never be his father, but we shouldn’t expect him to. That’s not fair to him. I’ve often been a critic of Chavez for the fights he’s had, but I’m actually looking forward to see what Freddie Roach will do with this kid. You gotta admit, it’s a step in the right direction.

  8. didnt this kid get caught taking steroids?? well he got suspended for taking steroids while fighting bumbs. i dont see nothn gd in this kid. so many wins against nobodys.

  9. TIAJUANA I agree with you as well. It anit easy being the son of a legend. Sadly, he will always be compared to his dad and UNFAIRLY expected to scale great heights in the sport, no matter how truly talented he is or ISN’T. It’s just the way it goes. But he has greatly benefited from having the ‘Chavez” name. Would’ve he headlined as many ppv’s as he’s had if his last name was Zepeda, Rivera or Huertas?? Can anyone HONESTLY declare that he’s EARNED his multi ppv status?? His name is sort of an inheritance so…. he has the RIGHT to cash in on whatever his father has given him, like his name for instance.

Yes, Freddie is one of the better trainer/strategist in the sport but he’s not God. He can’t make Chavez Jr walk on water, divide the waters nor make him an elite.

  11. Totally agree EZ E, I wonder how much will he able to improve, (if any) but I don’t expect him to be the next Pacquiao, I think Freddy can only do so much with whatever talent he actually has, If he is cut to be a good champion this is his chance to improve to be one, but I agree he wont achieve greatness like his father did, I don’t see that spark in him and most fighters that have become great had that spark, and people could tell those kids had something special, even without a good trainer, Jr has none of that.

  12. I don’t expect grest things from young Chavez, nor do i doubt that he can improve some with Freddie. He can but…. enough to be considered an elite?? hmmmm…. No, I don’t think so. Not now, not ever.

I do believe that he has enough to defeat Duddy BUT so can 50 other top 154/160LB’ers. At the same time I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if he loses.

And… I wish him the best, great or not.
