Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is already planning to defend his junior middle weight title which he won last week by beating Mathew Hatton at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., in a pay-per-view card to be headlined in his home town of Guadalajara, Mexico.

An opponent hasn’t been announced yet but there has been interest of fighting Juan Manuel Marquez after both were trash talking at one another. The fight with Hatton drew over 11,600 boxing fans in attendance and 1.4 million viewers according to HBO.

Rumor is that if he wins on June 18 he might also fight on September 17, the weekend of Mexican Independence Day. This 20-year-old kid with a record of 36-0-1, 26KOs is on the right path lets just hope he is not flying to fast.

  1. if chavez j.r wins they should put the 2 paper champs to fight. canelo vs chavez j.r… these 2 guys will have titles and will fight nobody’s for 2 or 3 more years. i like canelo more than chavez j.r but i still think he didnt do much of anything to earn a title shot. and then to fight hatton who moved up from 147 to fight for a 154 title?? i agree with marquez 100%.

  2. i think marquez needs to get a life canelo is a good fighter what i dont understand is why canelo wasnt happy to win a title and good job for martinez for winning that sergie martinez is a very good fighter canelo and martinez would be a good fight but canelom would lose

  3. EDGAR I FEAR this scenario: If Chavez Jr defeats Zbik then Arum will allow/insist young Julio make as many LOW THREAT/EASY as possible. This of course won’t be too hard to accomplish with the “blessing” of WBC/Suliaman. Suliaman will come up with steady stream of some “out of nowhere” mandatory MERIT-LESS challengers with “attractive” patted records, NO DOUBT.

And Oscar will do basically the same with Canelo, although I tend to believe that he will face better opponents that Chavez Jr, but with little chances of actually winning as well. Both promoters will cook the Canelo vs Chavez Jr fight til perfection before the BobFatther and The Golden Boy FINALLY decide it’s time to serve it to the public.

You can bet that NONE of the WORTHY contenders will get the due opportunities until Arum and Oscar have their way. A shame!! They will pay the usual “step aside” money when necessary and if the RIGHTFUL challenger DEMANDS his opportunity they will go quietly to WBC/Suliaman have have him “suddenly” REMOVED and REPLACED by a new “MORE DESERVING” joke of a mandatory contender. You will see that during the next months the “mandatory” challengers will NOT be the best in both divisions have to offer. This is nothing new. It’s only another way the WBC keeps their ‘cash cow’ ON TOP and OUT OF DANGER until someone makes them an offer THEY CAN’T REFUSE!! The WBA/IBF/WBO are equally as guilty of these “crimes” but the WBC and Suliaman are the MAJOR CULPTRTS, HEADS ABOVE and IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN.

    Well… just a thought. Peace!!

  4. Totally agree with Jay, and yeah Jonny-Boy, Martinez is the real Champion (even more for HBO after loosing Pacquiao, he fought some exiting bouts, had one if not the best KO of the year and they reward him with a unknown and defensive fighter? He should be fighting big Money fights on HBO PPV, but he is taking it has a Champ, hope he get’s pass Serhiy and doesn’t look as bad as he might look against such a defensive fighte.

  5. Martinez will tear Canelo apart, they would have to be dumb to put Canelo against Martinez. Thats a fight I think will never happen because by the time Canelo is ready for that fight Martinez will probably be retired. Canelo needs to mature more as a fighter. It is fucked up whats going on with Martinez having to fight guys that are unknowns here and to boot they guy he’s fighting is a defensive technical fighter that can make the fight a bore and make Martinez look bad. I say Martinez still stops him though and I really hope he gets a big fight after like he deserves. Martinez is a real champion doesn’t complain at all and fights anybody.

  6. I know what you meen tijuana, its not cool what they did with Martinez. Its also not cool what their doing with chaves and they will be handling canelo with care. The kids becoming real popular so they are going to milk his popularity as much as they can. These ppl at HBO are trying to handle boxing like its one of their T.V. shows. What ever happend to the ranking system? Looks to me like these T.V. networks and money hungry “boxing ppl” feel its ok to byepass rankings. They have disappointed the fans and are ruining boxing.

  7. HBO wont put the 20 year old Canelo in for the beating of his life with Martinez, they will milk that kid for at least 1 year before they put him on a real good fight, I think he still at least 2 or 3 fights behind being in with a class opponent.

And HBO is making a mess with Martinez, he was 2010 fighter of the year, yet he was giving a hard unknown fighter to fight against this upcoming Saturday, not cool, not cool.

  8. Well it was more like, Marquez was criticizing Canelo getting a free pass to a title witch is true, they gave him that title, plain and simple, so I agree with Marquez on that, and Canelo said well if you don’t believe I’m worth a title come find out your self.

That’s all good but that fight won ever happen, Marquez has said he wants the big names and big money fights, he is coming from the biggest pay day of his career and I don’t think he will settle for anything less that millions for his next fight, Marquez pretty much said no to Morales because he wants to Pursuit a fight with Pacquiao without Golden Boy in the middle, same thing Mosley has done in securing a fight with the Pacman.

Marques knows the time is ticking and he has noting to win with fighting Alvarez, no way Marquez takes that fight, maybe if Marquez fights Pacquiao and loses again then I can see Marquez Vs Canelo if they offer him good money on like a farewell passing the tourch fight, but still the weight difference is to much so who knows.

For Canelo I think they will find an easy fight for June 18 and I think we wont see him fighting a big name till maybe early next year.

  9. I heard Canelo called out Marquez on national television in Mexico, and Marquez rightfully ripped him for not making weight for his first world title fight it was truly unprofessional. Either way I think Canelo calling out Marquez is a dumb move on his part he is much bigger and physically stronger then Marquez what will he prove and honestly I think Marquez can beat him even being smaller. Either way what can Canelo gain by beating Marquez that he can beat a natural lightweight when he’s a junior middleweight and what if he loses to a naturally much smaller man he will turn into a joke. Either way not smart to call out Marquez he has nothing to lose and everything to gain from this fight while Canelo has a lot to lose if Marquez beats him and I wouldn’t rule that out. Interesting but I don’t think it will materialize into much then just trash talk.
