This Saturday, April 20, on Showtime from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, Mexican knockout artist and WBC champ Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will revenge his brother’s loss and attempt to unify the junior middleweight world title against WBA champ Austin Trout.

What makes this fight intense from his previous 41 bouts for Canelo? Is that his making this fight personal and wants revenge his brother’s loss. On February 5, 2011, in Mexico, Trout defeated Rigoberto Alvarez, the older brother of “Canelo”, via unanimous decision to capture the WBA junior middleweight world title.

“Because he beat my brother and took his belt, this fight has more meaning,” Alvarez said. “It’s personal because he took something from us. After I win this fight, I’m going to get that belt and I’m going to give it to my brother.”

At only 22 years of age, “Canelo” Alvarez is already considered by many to be the future of the sport. I am predicting an early knock out. Personally Trout hasn’t done much in my opinion. Trout’s recent one-sided victory over a badly faded Miguel Cotto doesn’t say much.

Trout reminds me of Josesito Lopez, Josesito had his 15 mins of fame when he beat Victor Ortiz but only to have his dreams crushed in 5 rounds when referee Joe Cortez had to jump in and stop the fight after “Canelo” unleashed a barrage of punches.

A Mike Tyson quote puts in perspective:

“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.”

The co-feature is a scheduled 10-round lightweight fight between prospects Omar Figueroa Jr. (20-0-1, 16 KOs) of Weslaco, Texas and Puerto Rico’s Abner Cotto (16-0, 7 KOs), who is Miguel Cotto’s cousin.

  1. I tend to agree with Steve on this one,at the same time I can see win in alverez s eyes. The motivation is his big brother, and his hard punching will prove too much for Trout.
I give Trout all the cradit in the world for facing this man,I know I would not do it. He is reveling in the spotlight and all eyes are on him,at each test he has to pass,to keep putting notches on his belt. Cotto was in way to many hard fought battles, and had lost the edge of believing he was unstoppable. Alverez himself, believes in himself ,as long as he is not distracted he cannot lose to anyone. My oinion only ,but Canelo,is the only one today who can beat, Canelo.

  2. This could be a tough fight for Canelo, because Trout is quick and will be on the move, trying to outpoint Alvarez. But the Mexican is the harder puncher and will eventually find the mark. Alvarez in seven rounds.

  3. Trout does have some key features like:

    His a natural at 154
    His south paw

Something Canelo has not face before. I still think Canelo wins by knockout.

  4. Trout reminds the editorial author of Josesito Lopez ? Trout is a far superior ring technician than Josesito Lopez. This is a very good competitive fight, two very well-matched fighters. I’m actually looking at this fight as a gauge as to how good, or how great, Alvarez is,or will become in the future. Don’t be surprised if this fight is closely contested, Trout might be the most under rated current champion out there .
