There are only two weeks left until Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) steps into the ring against Canelo Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s). This is the first PPV appearance for the defector from Cuba. Nicknamed “The American Dream,” that’s exactly what he is hoping to achieve by beating one of boxing’s biggest superstars in Alvarez.

With similar opponents in Alfredo Angulo, who they both stopped; and Austin Trout, who they both earned decision victories against, this fight looks to be a very competitive one. Lara is a southpaw with power and he beat Austin Trout in a much more dominating fashion than Alvarez. Lara is a difficult fighter for anyone, which is why Golden Boy Founder and acting CEO, Oscar De La Hoya, was not in favor of his most popular fighter taking this fight.

Give credit to Canelo who could have fought anybody he wanted to. He wants to fight the best, according to him, and he knows Lara is dangerous; subsequently, he is fighting maybe the toughest guy out there at light middleweight. Interesting to note for this fight, even though Lara wanted to defend his WBA title, this will be a nontitle fight at 155. Alvarez reportedly struggles to make the cut at 154, which Lara has called out as unprofessional.

The fight will take place on Showtime PPV on Saturday July 12, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV. Look for Canelo Alvarez to have his hands full against Lara, who was able to get into Canelo’s ear and earn his way into this fight, along with earning his biggest payday. With his fifth child on the way, Lara should be hungry and ready to continue his quest for the American Dream. However, in speaking with those who have seen him in training camp, he may not be training as serious as he needs to for the talented Alvarez, who is younger and stronger.

Since I like the action, and I know some of you do too, I will update you on the betting odds for this one. Canelo is remaining steady around -145. To make it simple, looking at most odds makers; on average, betting $100 on Lara will earn you $145 versus the favorite in Alvarez, where betting $100 will earn you around $55 and your money back. Look for the line to stay pretty steady at this point.

I lean toward Canelo imposing his size and power on Lara. Despite what some people have said about him since the loss against Floyd Mayweather, Canelo Alvarez is not overrated and he has a high level of talent combined with youth, which will make it difficult for Lara and other top fighters for years to come.

  1. Thank you for the comment,i did try and tell you it will be nothing like the trout fight and i was correct, trout never went through the amateurs,so does not hit and run,he tries to counter,as we all got told lara would”canelo never seen a counter puncher this good and wait till lara fights floyd people was saying,so when i seen your comment i was a little rude so forgive me.canelo has a lot of things to work on,but he spends most of the time losing weight instead of working on the things you mentioned. And i actually think mosley gave canelo a better fight than lara did.lol. hey man check out 10players on you tube, you will enjoy the video’s,all the best.

  2. Alright, not that I need to defend to ellaborate on my last comment on this string, I will. Regarding Tez comment before the fight, we all read about boxing; otherwise, what are we doing now. However, it does not take any reading to realize Mosely was not even close to a top or A list fighter when he fought Canelo. I am a Canelo supporter, so next time when you blast read a litttle closer (I was actually in line with you prior to the fight for the most part). And to another point, although it was to no fault or lack of trying on the part of Canelo, the Lara fight was not much better or interesting than the Trout fight. Obviously, this was due to Lara running all night; however, even so, it was not an exciting fight because he was not in front of Canelo and thus Canelo could not throw high punch counts. It also showed that Canelo has some improvements to make against slick fighters who move around and like most any true fan watching the fight could see, he needs to learn to cut the ring off better against these guys rather than chasing them. Tabloid out, LOL

  3. Appreciate and respect your comment brother, boxing fans should debate on good terms with facts, not rhetoric, good opinions as well, not based on race or dislike because of a none boxing opinion.Anyway canelo beat lara as you might now know,i had it 7/5 canelo, lara had a great first 3 rounds but crumbled after that, was thowing single shots and running, even with very high groin guard canelo hammered his body, ronny shields even told lara “Don’t give up now” at the end of the 8th.Canelo is what we call a “Heavy” puncher,he get’s close and throws combo’s,lara is a “sharp” “hitter”,he want’s to cut you and get a stoppage, its his day’s as amateur, that’s how they score points as opposed to canelo’s style.

  4. When i saw the canelo vs angulo fight i was waiting for canelo to drop angulo many times, as people have said, he has power, speed, youth, hunger. …..
Angulo was right in front of him the whole time but canelo never damaged angulo, i know the fight was stopped, but i never really saw angulo in any big trouble, he did not even fought back, what i saw was a different Angulo not canelo power nor speed, my bet for this fight against lara is that canelo will try to rip lara’s head off in the first 2 or 3 rounds but will hit thin air and lara tagging canelo’s face with the jab and maybe we are going to see him going down by the 8 round, after that canelo will just avoid to be dropped again, Lara takes the SD. Not lara or canelo fan, just a boxing fan giving an opinion

  5. Canelo has only been schooled by most probably the greatest boxer of his age in floyd mayweather, pounded a guy who bullied and knocked down lara TWICE! and you think it will be similar to the trout fight? lol.And mosley a class c fighter? lol, youv’e not been watching boxing very long have you? And you read tabloid newspapers? Because thats what you sound like,a story in a tabloid that’s come through 4 or 5 “sources” (That was never checked.) before being published. All the very best to you.

  6. LOL, you guys are too funny. Tez, Mosely was once an A list fighter; however, when the kid actually fought him, he was a B- at best unfortunately for fans; probably even a C+. He was once great, I agree. I am guessing Boxing Fan was trying to get Canelo fans going with that comment since obviously the soon to be 24 year old is far from hanging them up, win or lose. On a side note, look for this fight to be similar to the Trout and Canelo fight unless the kid has a punch output of close to 50 punches a round and he backs Lara up.

  7. Boxing fan please troll somewhere else, your obviously trolling when you say a 23 yr old should hang up his gloves if he looses, this guy should be banned,he brings nothing to a debate only rubbish.

  8. Shane mosley not an A list fighter? Just by not knowing who canelo has fought makes any and everything you say pretty much junk. Shocked you do not class mosley as a A list fighter, wow.

  9. Not sure Canelo has beaten an A fighter? He is bigger so likely his size will be the factor in the win…hope he shows some boxing skills. If its a slug match and cant hurt Lara I’m betting on Lara to out point the limited output of Canelo. If Canelo loses he should hang it up.

  10. Glad you said canelo wll win this fight. If one of the greatest boxers of all time need’s to drain a 22yr old canelo to 152 to take that bit of danger away, lara is in deep trouble in this fight, especially at 155,there is no doubt saul struggles to make 154.(It’s pretty much fact) Canelo could of fought anyone like you say but lara’s mouth has gotten him in a world of hurt.Canelo really took on board what happened against floyd,he has learnt from it as we seen in the angulo fight and he will bring huge pressure to lara,if he doesn’t lara beats him, even as a canelo fan i’m saying that,he has got to pressure lara, especially as lara is a sharp puncher as opposed to canelo being a heavy puncher so lara could even get a stoppage if canelo isn’t on him for a full 3 minutes of every round. It should be a classic, lara has made it personal and even though canelo won’t let anything put hm of a game plan he was fuming at the press tour’s when lara said certain things so he want’s to punish him,bad mistake.I think canelo tag’s lara like angulo did, lara is very predictable to the trained eye and canelo should be able to catch him when he tries sliding away on the ropes in the 9th or 10th.All the best everyone.

  11. Can’t wait. Lara must be getting a full meal with the prefight hoopla to have slaked off on his training and lose his hunger. Big mistake with a fighter like Canelo.
