Face to Face in Los Angeles!
Mark May 7 down in your boxing calendars.
Mexican puncher Canelo Alvarez will meet British boxer Amir “King” Khan at the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas during Cinco de Mayo weekend. A special 3-City Press Tour (London, New York and Los Angeles) took place this week with the tour finale taking place Wednesday night at Universal Studios’ CityWalk.
This L.A. press conference had it all. From host Mario Lopez to screaming fans to confetti streamers signaling the end of the press tour, Canelo vs. Khan was officially announced with a bang.
WBC champion Canelo (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and Khan (31-3, 19 KOs), a former two-time champ thanked their teams and fans for their support while promising to provide for an exciting night of action come May 7. Styles make fights and slugger Canelo versus boxer Khan will make for one explosive match-up their respective teams both said. This clash is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Canelo Promotions and will be for Canelo’s championship titles at a catchweight of 155. This marquee matchup will air live on HBO Pay-Per-View.
And while Mexican warrior Canelo was the overwhelming favorite according to his legion of adoring fans at CityWalk, Amir says their Cinco de Mayo war will have a big “British Invasion” in Vegas as well. It will be Mexico vs. the United Kingdom as these two go toe to toe in the ring.
Canelo and Khan met the media before meeting the masses. And when these two headliners walked outside, the audience erupted in cheers. They went face to face as smoke plumes accentuated this battle to come. While Khan is the underdog in this game, his team says don’t count him out. And after the speeches, they engaged in another staredown.
Onstage at CityWalk, the two joined their respective teams including Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo’s trainers Eddy Reynoso and Chepo Reynoso, Khan’s father/manager Shah Khan and trainer Virgil Hunter, HBO’s Tony Walker, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and more. Also announced to the crowd and media in attendance were Golden Boy stars Joseph Diaz Jr., Diego De La Hoya, Jason Quigley and NABF champ Daniel “Chapulin” Valdivia, representing the WBC’s Olive Trees For Peace program. The Casa Mexico Tequila ladies and the Tecate girls also were featured at this outdoor extravaganza.
