According to online rumors, a super welterweight showdown is being conceived for late November between current undefeated WBC super welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (38-0-1, 28KOs) and Kermit Cintron (33-4-1, 28KOs) in Cancun, Mexico. The proposed HBO triple header would also include Adrien “The Problem” Broner (21-0, 17KOs) and Gary Russell Jr. (18-0, 10KOs) in separate bouts from Cincinnati, Ohio, in a split site format.

If the fight is made, Cintron will be the toughest challenge yet for the 21-year-old Alvarez. Alvarez captured the vacant title via a unanimous decision over career long welterweight Matthew Hatton earlier this year and has defended it twice. In June versus Ryan Rhodes and recently against Alfonso Gomez who Alvarez stopped in six rounds last month.

In Cintron, Alvarez will find an experienced two-time welterweight champion who despite some controversial episodes in his career, still would mount a difficult riddle for Alvarez to answer. Cintron is considered an athletically gifted hard puncher who has faced world class opposition such as Antonio Margarito, Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams. In his last bout last August, Cintron earned a unanimous decision over Antwone Smith.

Broner and Russell Jr., who both made their HBO debuts earlier this year, are still with out dance partners for the telecast.

  1. 2. EDGAR The TRUE reason why Cintron is even being considered for this opportunity is because he’s looked LOUSY in both his last 2 fights. First he lost miserably to a so-so Molina and BARELY got by C-level fighter Antwoun Smith. Prior to those was his Infamous “Frog” fight vs Paul Williams. Let’s forget about his win over Angulo, that was 2 1/2 years ago.

Let’s look at it this way: If he had defeated Molina and kayo’d Smith, does anyone really believe that he’d be fighting Alvarez?? I don’t think so. Now, Kermit will be a fairly good name to add on to Canelo’s resume, I agree, but the TRUTH is that he’s being REWARDED for LOSING rather than winning.
