WBC super welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez scored a twelfth round TKO over Ryan Rhodes (45-5, 31 KOs) on Saturday night at the Arena Vicente Fernandez in Guadalajara, Mexico. Over 12,000 tickets were sold.
Alvarez showed his ability not only too braw but to box. Alvarez was in command from the start and was able to drop Rhodes for his third time in his professional carrier in round four. The 34-year-old from UK couldn’t land a solid punch. Alvarez punished Rhodes for the most part forcing the referee to wave it off and even after Alvarez scored a 12th-round TKO against Rhodes to run his professional record to 37-0-1, 27KOs “Canelo” hasn’t been tested.
The next step for Canelo is to challenge the undefeated Armenian-American, Vanes Martirosyan, who fought for the U.S. in the 2004 Olympics.
“Canelo looked great. He really put his punches together and made Rhodes fight tentatively,” Martirosyan said.
The Glendale, California, based Martirosyan (30-0-19KOs) earned a title shot versus Alvarez when he knocked out Saul Roman in seven rounds on June 4th at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. Martirosyan wants to face Alvarez on September 17th for Mexican Independence Day weekend.
“I hear Canelo wants to fight in September. I say let’s do it. We can sell out STAPLES,” he said. “He has his Mexican fans and along with all my Armenian fans I also have many Mexican fans. I would be honored to fight on that date.”
Even though Vanes holds the mandatory position to face Alvarez, Golden Boy who promotes Alvarez, is not showing any interest. Canelo undoubtedly would have a difficult time against likes of Miguel Coto, Alfredo Angulo and Paul Williams his logical next step for Alvarez is to fight Martirosyan who is trained by Freddie Roach.
On the co-feature event Unbeaten super featherweight Adrien Broner (21-0, 17 KOs) demolished Jason Litzau (28-3, 21 KOs) in the first round. Broner trapped Litzau in the corner and battered Litzau to the deck. Time was 2:58. With the win, Broner claimed the vacant USNBC title.

The whole fight was one sided. I’m not suprised the Golden Boy doesn’t want to risk their new prodigy against Cotto or Angulo or Martirosyan.
Canelo looked good in this fight, despite Rhodes not being anything special I expected Canelo to have some trouble against a vet like Rhodes. He handled him quite easily from start to finish and throw some great combinations. Next step should for sure be someone like Vanes but I don’t think GB has any intent to make that fight this year.
