Canelo Alvarez knocked down Josesito Lopez three times en route to a dominating fifth round technical knockout defense of his WBC Super Welterweight World Championship in front of a sold out crowd of 14,275 fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. on Saturday. There are times when one has to admit his mistake. Canelo Alvarez looked for more impressive than I anticipated.
Canelo displayed not only the power but also great speed and defense. While Lopez was by far out of his weight class, in typical Lopez fashion he displayed a warriors heart by getting off the canvas 3 times only to be stopped by Joe Cortez. After the third knockdown it was apparent that Cortez was one final flurry away from stopping the fight. That came at 2:55 in the 5th round.
However within those 5 rounds Canelo showed he was the superior fighter. Where does Canelo go from here? The Goldenboy team probably has a couple fighters targeted, with the huge support 
Canelo had in the arena tonight, its safe to say that he is a superstar in America as well, Mexican independence weekend or not.
“I’m not always looking for the knockout, but this was perfect tonight,” Canelo said. “I had a big responsibility fighting for my fans around the world this weekend and I think I made them happy. I want the big fights now – (Miguel) Cotto and (Floyd) Mayweather.”
On Saturday night Canelo proved me wrong. Very wrong. But just as Lopez admitted he was out of his class, I can admit how very wrong I was. Size or not, Alvarez is a force to be reckoned with.
In what surely will be considered a Fight Of The Year candidate, former world champion Marcos Maidana (32-3, 28 KOs), of Santa Fe, Argentina, scored a knockout at 0:43 of the eighth round to defeat perennial contender Jesus Soto Karass (26-8-3, 17 KOs), of Sinaloa, Mexico and captured the 
vacant WBA Intercontinental Welterweight Title.
In other bouts featured on SHOWTIME, Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35 KOs), Cuahutemoc, Mexico registered a technical decision over defending champion Jhonny Gonzalez (52-8-0, 45 KOs), of Mexico City, Mexico to capture the WBC Featherweight World Championship.
In the opening bout Leo Santa Cruz (21-0-1, 12 KOs), of Los Angeles, Calif. defended his IBF Bantamweight World Championship against former two-time world champion Eric Morel (46-4-0, 23 KOs), of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a technical knockout victory in the fifth round when Morel’s corner stopped the bout.
Canelo vs Cotto or Canelo vs Martinez would be classics either way it goes.
In my opinion, Canelo is ready for either of them.
I bet the Vegas odds would be pretty close.

Hell no Canelo is an axcelent fighter but no an elite one compare Canelo with Cotto never hello the people don’t remember Cotto vs Mayweather he is the only one how can realy fight te best and the negotiations with paquiau never concrete because the fuck…. ok who got prooved wrong here? you have a guy who fights in the 154 fighting some unknown guy who beat ortiz by luck because as i recall he was loosing the fight until ortiz got cought with his mouth open. the they put him for a title shot at 154??? so the 154 pound bully decides like his every fight to fight someone smaller or older in this case canelo was much bigger and after hydrating himself of course. yea the guy looks unstoppable because of the fighters they put in front of him… welll all i have to say is one joker down and one is left…
When a boxer gets knocked out cold, or loses badly it is hard to return to the ring. Some never do others think real hard about returning. Others just take it as a lesson and keep going. and some do return but very cautiously. they think very hard who they will fight and who not to. That is Cotto They go into the ring hoping and praying it wont happen again its hard to get that nerve again You get nervous about letting lose in the ring cuzz you might get hurt. maybe m wrong but he seems to have lost a piece of his heart
I have read some of your articles, and get the impression you don’t know what your talking about most of the time. Have you been in the ring before?. i dont mean with a camera. The kid had lot of heart but had no business fighting for the belt . Against Canelo or any other . The guy got heart, some skills, coordination but for his age, he has lots more to learn, and running out of time. Who was the last Boxer, to win a title and has never gone 12 rounds. either because he won early or or lost ahead of schedule. He got lucky and got Ortiz with his mouth open, or he would never had broken it. I say it was luck. although he does have alot of heart , the press and writers, gave him false hope. .Honestly they had him thinking hes ready for cotto, Mayweather, or The Pokymon. He only got his heart broken Lots of boxer when they get Knocked out cold . always get a second thought about returning to the ring. some take it as a lesson and fight again others have a very hard time boxing again same thing when they lose like Josesito. he is a good very good boxer but nowhere near ready for a title. Looks like he learned, lots of punching skills & counter punching, but no defense at all and that isnt easy to learn at his age

Hell no. Cotto whoops Canelo. The only thing he proved is that he can beat a 135-40lb fighter.
