Kevin Iole from Yahoo! Sports did an interview with Robert Garcia; Garcia is the new trainer who is working with the notorious Antonio Margarito for his showdown with Manny Pacquiao on Nov 13 for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title.

Garcia talks about how he use to be a boxer with a career of 33-3 a former International Boxing Federation junior lightweight champion, Garcia’s losses came to opponents who had a combined record of 70-1.

But most importantly he talks about Margarito. Most in the media and the public don’t share Garcia’s view of Margarito. And Garcia knows there is going to be plenty of heat ahead, as people question his integrity and his ability to prepare Margarito to fight Pacquiao.

He’s also training against Freddie Roach, the man widely regarded as the best trainer in the world and a man that Espinoza and Diaz briefly considered as Margarito’s trainer. He said he’s comfortable with the comparisons, even though he knows he’s likely to come out on the short end of them. Roach has been named Trainer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2009 and is regarded as one of the best trainers in history.

Garcia’s résumé is not nearly as impressive, but he isn’t concerned. He praised Roach’s ability, but said it’s not a competition between he and Roach. It’s a fight between Pacquiao and Margarito and Garcia believes he has the right guy in that battle.

“Manny has proven he’s best in the world pound-for-pound,” Garcia said. “I know that. You have to give him credit for what he’s accomplished, because he’s done so much. But he’s going against a fighter who is so much bigger and who is going to be on him every single second for all 12 rounds.

“A guy who is that much bigger is going to be on him the entire night. Manny has fast, powerful combinations, but once Margarito takes those and keeps coming, it’s going to be a long night for Manny. “

Do you think Robert Garcia has what it takes to help Margarito capture a win over Manny Pacquiao?

  1. If we look upon Garcias’ accomplishments with other fighters it’s not difficult to agree that he does bring out the best in them. How much of difference will he be in Margarito still remains to be seen. How many other dimensions can he add to a basically one-dimensional fighter? Or can he make him a BETTER one-dimensional fighter??

As a trainer he seems to be progressing as time goes by, very assured of himself and controls his corner well when things are ‘heating up’ and even when things aren’t going too well for his fighter, which are one of the marks of a POTENTIALLY great trainer. Time will tell if he will develope into a top notch STRATEGIST, a virtue that will elevate him to one of the TOP OF HIS CLASS!! He seems to be on his way.

  2. Anyway ,if the fight is fixed ,it will be obvious to tell .So let’s wait and see.You better behave Arum .

  3. @ Mexicanmafia,
I hope that Arum doesn’t influence Tony to loose the fight purposly .
I will fu.. him up .

  4. certainly .Garcia is a renowned trainer .I believe the Garia profoundly believe in the unique ability
of Margarito .He knows that Margarito has the heart and the aggressiveness to make manny’s plans go awry .Margarito’s performance against Cotto was a lot better the manny’s .
manny will be shocked ,confused and punished.
It’s not the ability if Roach that make him famous
    it’s his fighters ability .
Roach is just a trainer .

  5. I just hope margarito beats the crap out of pacquiao.. But i dont think bob arum is going to let his cash cow loose.
