The mortal remains of Miguel Cotto Carrasquillo, father of former welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, returned home yesterday in Caguas for one last stand.
Yesterday, family and friends of the Cotto Vazquez family visited the home to pay their last respects to the former amateur judge who also worked tirelessly with his sons in their boxing careers.
Cotto Sr. passed away unexpectedly last Sunday of an apparent heart attack after asking a liquor store employee for help.
In a written press release, the Cotto family solicited “for us to be permitted to tackle this tragedy with complete privacy. Yesterday, the media was not allowed in the funeral and the presence of reporters and photographers irritated the former champion as well as his brother Jose Miguel Cotto who asked the press to immediately vacate the premises.
Miguel Cotto arrived to the home of his parents around 2:15pm in the same grey Mercedes Benz that his father drove when he suffered the attack. There he was welcomed by dozens of family members and friends who were also there to display their solidarity.
“We give thanks all the people who have sent us messages and the show of love from everybody. We ask for prayers so that we can face such a tragedy,” Cotto stated.
The body of Cotto Sr. will remain in his home until today, Tuesday, and then it will be cremated.
Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon was one of the first to pay his respects at the Cotto home and stated that he felt the loss of “Don Miguel.”
“I knew him since my amateur days when he was a boxing referee. A loss like this is difficult but one has to be ready for whatever situation. The important thing is that the brothers (Juan, Jose Miguel and Miguel Angel) maintain their unity and be strong for the sake of their mother,” Calderon stated.
Wilfredo Gomez sent a written message to the family.
“I am heart broken with the news of the passing of Cotto Sr. Please receive our sincerest condolences. We will pray to GOd for him and for peace and serenity of the entire family,” Gomez wrote.
