Brandon Rios manger, Cameron Dunkin, confirmed to BoxingScene.com that Rios injured his right elbow during training which has forced him to withdraw from his HBO televised fight against Mauricio Herrera which was scheduled for July 7th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.

Rumor is that Rios struggling to make weight and that is why he is pulling out. Though it is just a rumor at this time, I believe it. Rios swears up and down that he was making weight for his last fight against Richard Abril, he loud mouth to everyone that he hired a nutritionist to help him make weight…. On the day of the weight in, he was two full pounds over losing his chance to win a title for the second fight in a row.

Even Mauricio doesn’t believe he got injured.

“I dont believe he is injured at all. If he focused more on his training rather than traveling to all these fight cards all over the U.S., he wouldn’t have to worry about his weight which has been a problem for him his last few fights. Hopefully Top Rank will still be able to get me on the show,” said Herrera.

I am very disappointed this fight got cancelled. In my opinion, its better than the main event, Nonito Donaire vs Jeffrey Mathebula.

  1. I recently read a report that Rios was indeed struggling with weight again. Where the hell is Robert Garcia and their alleged nutritionalist during all the weeks leading up to his fights? Seems odd that even Rios doesn’t seem to care about his career spiraling out of control. I get the feeling there’s more to this story than is being reported.

  2. Brandon Rios sent out a press release saying the rumors are not true about him not making weight…. but I still don’t believe him, his the same guy who said he will make weight both times… and failed.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me but you can’t fooled me again.

  3. I know Brandon has sturggled to make weight these past few fights but I am a fan of Brandon and I believe if he says he is injured and can not fight I believe that. He is a great fighter and always ready to get in the ring. And yes this would have been a great fight I too was looking forward to watching this match.

  4. I was looking forward to this fight, this really sucks. I to believe it was weight not injury that caused Rios to pull out of the fight. Hopefully they can find a suitable replacement for Herrera because the Donaire fight seems a little weak to be the only fight on an HBO card.
