Lately there have been some great fights and this Saturday is no exception when middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik defends his belt in Atlantic City, N.J., against Sergio Martinez and on the same night super middleweight contender Edison Miranda takes on IBF champ Lucian Bute in Montreal.
Kelly Pavlik earned my respect when he demolished Jermain Taylor in 2007 and 08. I will be the first to admit I was rooting for Taylor the first time but it didn’t take much to change my mind.
I was disappointed when Pavlik was out-pointed by Bernard Hopkins in late 08 and I wasn’t impressed by his two recent wins over Marco Antonio Rubio or Miguel Espino either. To make matters worse, he cancelled his fights against Paul Williams due to a staph infection on his hand. I lost hope for the kid of Youngstown, Ohio.
So, this Saturday night I will be placing my bets on the man from Argentina, Sergio Martinez. That’s right, the doctor has ordered an upset special!
Although Martinez lost his previous fight against Paul Williams, I find it a bit controversial. One of the judges, Pierre Benoist, scored the fight a whopping 119-110 in favor of Williams while Lynne Carter had it 115-113 for Williams. Julie Lederman scored the bout 114-114.
Martinez showed he could play with the big boys as he knocked down Williams in the final seconds of the first round. Martinez also threw nearly as many power punches (638) as Paul Williams (631) and we all know Williams is known for his extremely high punch totals. Martinez also got a controversial draw against Kermit Cintron in February which I clearly think Martinez should have taken it. Martinez had won 28 fights in a row prior to the Williams bout.
What’s your opinion? Who are you going for Pavlik or Martinez?
Agree, I’m all on for Martinez, he got robed twice, it’s going to be a long night for Pavlick, should be a good fight.
@Aldo I agree with you..
Its going to be hard, but its possible.
to be honest i have little simpathy for agertinian boxers but Sergio has thats special something i definitely think he won those two fights against williams and cintron, hopefully it doest happen to him against pavlik too
