In front of 17,560 boxing fans at the Bell Centre Bernard Hopkins became the oldest fighter to win a major world championship, Hopkins (52-5-2) broke the age record set by George Foreman in a heavyweight title victory over Michael Moorer in 1994. Hopkins won at 46 years, 4 months, 6 days. Foreman was 45 years, 10 months taking the WBC light heavyweight title Saturday night from Jean Pascal.

Pascal was unable to seriously hurt Hopkins; Hopkins landed more punches and was the master craftsman throughout the fight giving him a unanimous decision over Jean Pascal. The score was 116-112, 115-113 and 115-114.

“He loads up on every shot and I know Pascal does that,” Hopkins said. “He loads up on those shots because he knows he’s a puncher. He thinks he’s a puncher and he wants to blow the house down, like the big, bad wolf. … He gets so excited and he has the testosterone going so high. He’s like, ‘Boom. Boom. Boom,’ and me, the old fox, wanted him to do that. I just leaned here, I leaned there and leaned there and you have a couple of misses.”

“It feels great,” said Hopkins “I did exactly what I wanted to do, which was break this record. I knew it was going to be a tough fight, but I wasn’t going to be denied. You don’t get a chance to do this too often. You are supposed to win titles when you are younger…in your twenties, not when you’re 46. I didn’t feel 46 I felt more like 36. I can say I am a great fighter. It was exciting. I think everybody enjoyed themselves.”

Though, Bernard Hopkins was crowned the newly WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins didn’t pay the sanctioning fee to the IBO, so the IBO belt held by Jean Pascal is now vacant.

Rumor is that Hopkins will fight Chad Dawson, Dawson won a 12-round unanimous decision over Montreal’s Adrian Diaconu in a light heavyweight elimination bout as part of the under card for Hopkins fight.

  1. I figured this fight would go this way, Pascal tires to quick and the old man is a fitness freak. Pascal is nothing special but congrats to Hopkins. To be honest I don’t know what’s up with Chad Dawson he should have beaten Pascal when they fought he had all the tools to do it and his fight on the undercard didn’t look too great either he seems hesitant. If that’s the Chad Dawson who is going to show up for the fight with Hopkins than I think the old man will dominate him.
