Media Workout for “Genesis” Boxing Show!
Get ready fight fans, there’s a brand new promotion in town!
Rebel-T Promotions (in association with Roy Jones Jr. Promotions) will be hosting their inaugural live boxing show billed as “Genesis” THIS Saturday, April 15, at the Burbank Marriott Convention Center in Burbank, Calif. Here’s my exclusive report–and sneak peek of what this weekend’s bash will be like!
There will be a scheduled seven bouts of fisticuffs including the Las Vegas’ Max Ornelas vs. Laredo’s Leopoldo Martinez main event on this “Genesis” card. A trio of the undercard fighters participated in a recent Media Workout held at Grampa’s Boxing Gym located in the City of Westminster. Humberto “Filly” Rubalcava and trainer Juan Juarez, Damien Lopez with father/trainer David Lopez and cornerman Steve Harpst, and Ricky Frausto with father/trainer Hugo Frausto hit the heavybags, shadowboxed and got some mitt work in at Wednesday’s gym workout.
These three young guns all expressed their excitement on being featured on this first-ever Rebel-T boxing card helmed by CEO/Founder Tony Hua and Event Coordinator John “Guapo” Maresca. Also at the gym this day was new pro Juan Padilla (who John Maresca has sparred in the past) and former amateur star and pro boxer Julie Rubalcava.
During breaks in the action, I chatted with gym owner Jessica Rangel, who is carrying on the family tradition of boxing. Her grandfather Rene Rangel and her family first opened this gym over six years ago; the petite brunette was also an amateur boxer. After Grampa Rene’s passing last year, Jessica and her grandmother have kept their successful gym open to the community in Orange County and beyond. And Grampa’s Boxing Gym is treasure trove with boxing memorabilia lining the walls of the spacious building which houses two boxing rings. I had a blast checking out all the vintage posters, photos and mementos noting past and current champs.
Filly Rubalcava, 22, Damien Lopez, 21, and Ricky Frausto, 20, and are all looking forward to lacing up this Saturday night, a day before Easter. After their workouts, Orange County portrait photographer held a special on-the-spot photo shoot with the young prizefighters featured under the lights. All three of these warriors are unbeaten and looking to make their mark in the sweet science. Earning victories this Saturday will inch them closer to their goals.
And what’s in store for the fans come Saturday night?
Event Coordinator John Maresca shared some details with me of what attendees can expect.
Maresca has invited champs and fighters including Mauricio Herrera, Mikey Garcia, Carlos Palomino, Seniesa Estrada, Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez, Gabriel Ruelas, Paul Banke, Jose Roman, Jesus Soto Karass, Ronnie Essett, Javier Mora, and more to mingle amongst the crowd. Famed East Coast ring announcer David Diamante will be center ring and at the mic. And after the fights have concluded, there will be a VIP Party ($20 entry fee) with celebrity guests available for photos and autographs. Tickets available onsite the evening of the fight night.
So don’t miss out on this inaugural show where you will have a chance to see some young, hungry prizefighters duking it out for glory!
