antonio-margaritoAntonio Margarito has lost three of his last four fights to Shane Mosley, Manny Pacquiao and was clearly outboxed by Miguel Cotto. Many people suggested, including myself, that it was time for the “Tijuana Tornado” to hang them up because of his right eye.

Margarito suffered a fractured orbital bone in his 12 round decision loss to Pacquiao in 2010. As a result of the beating Margarito took, he developed a large cataract in his right eye. Margarito had three eye surgeries to repair the problem before being given the opportunity to fight Cotto in a rematch. Knowing the sensitivity of the eye tissue, his eye will now be the shooting target. Margarito’s right eye will swell up and eventually closed.

Knowing the risk of losing your eye vision, one might think it is not worth the risk but unfortunately that’s not the case. Margarito has been quoted saying, “I’m willing to die in the ring”. A bold statement that I believe.

Margarito will once again return to the ring on May 26, 2012, in Tucson, Arizona against Abel Perry from Colorado. At this point, being a Margarito fan, I have mix feelings. I am happy to see him fight again but at the same time worried for his health.

  1. Antonio is an extremely proud Mexican fighter… Many fighters especially Mexican don’t know when it’s the right time to step away.. It’s easier said than done.. But I truly hope he thinks about his future after boxing..

  2. Well.. I believe that Margo can defeat half of the presently ranked 154Lb’ers and eventually Arum will match him with the top talent. He hasn’t been the same since the first Cotto fight. Like I said years ago, BOTH he and Cotto took a lot out of each other in July of 2008. At first most everybody thought it was Cotto that came out of the fight the worse of the two BUT.. it doesn’t seem that way anymore. He hasn’t won a meaningful fight since then while Cotto has won five. What’s the use of making so much $$$ on a reputation of beling a “human punching bag”?? Will he have the health to enjoy it?? His legacy is shot and will never overcome the shame, like it or not.

  3. I have been a fan of Margarito, even through the controversy he endured. Before he returned from that beating he received from Pacquiao I had no desire to see him back in the ring for his own health . Being a fan of his I’d hate to see him injured further, I sat through his rematch against Cotto and hoped he’d call it a career after that. Now I truly do believe his quote and I hope the people close to him get through to him that he is more or less done in the ring.
