Legendary Hall of Fame trainer Angelo Dundee is considered one of the greatest trainers of all-time. Dundee is best known for training Muhammad Ali. He was hired to work with Ali in 1960 and stayed with him until his last fight in 1981. Dundee also worked with Sugar Ray Leonard after he won the Olympics in 1976 among other great fighters.
I had the pleasure of meeting Angelo Dundee at Shane Mosley’s house in Big Bear, CA. At first, I didn’t know how to approach this famous trainer, I didn’t know if he will be conceited or what but after briefly talking to him, I realized he’s one of the nicest persons you will ever meet. When I heard his wife Helen died, I felt bad. Angelo and Helen would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in February.
Helen, 85, had suffered from various health problems in recent years. She died on Thursday near their home in Tampa.
“She is my toughest fighter,” Angelo will often say. A funeral will be held on Thursday at the Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home, Sunset Point Road in Clearwater, Florida. The viewing will be from 4-6 p.m.
I would like to personally send my condolences to Angelo and the entire Dundee Family.
