In the co-feature bout of Luis Carlo Abregu vs. Timothy Bradley in front 2,152 hardcore boxing fans at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage, CA, fan favorite super welterweight contender Alfredo Angulo stopped former world titleholder Joachim Alcine (32-2, 19 KOs) in the first round of a scheduled 12 round eliminator bout.
Once the dog was unleashed, he quickly attacked his pray, landing a vicious right hand to the head forcing Alcine to hold on. Alcine grabbed Angulo’s left arm and wouldn’t let go. As Angulo tried to free his arm, he landed 12-14 right hands pounding Alcine’s head. Both fighters were then separated but Angulo went for the kill and unleashed a series of punches that backed Alcine against the ropes. Angulo landed a hard right hand to the head followed by a left hook that prompted referee Dr. Lou Moret to step in and stop the bout at 2:59.
“He was hurt because he grabbed onto my arm,” said Angulo after the fight. “He wanted to hold on. I had one hand free to punch so I threw as many punches as I could.”
With the victory Angulo is the No. 1 contender for a world title bout. Angulo, from Downey, CA by way of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, improves to 19-1, 16 KOs.
