Boxing After Dark programming showcased 4 great fighters and 2 great fights.
This is one of the best B.A.D. cards in a while. Light heavyweights Tavouris Cloud fought to a unanimous decision victory against veteran Glen Johnson. Both Cloud and Johnson have come forward styles. Cloud, the younger, quicker, and stronger fighter would come forward with bursts of combinations. Johnson, the aged and more knowledgeable fighter showed used his experience to his advantage as he challenged Tavouris and kept his hands moving. Although Johnson seemed to consistently throw more punches, each punch was getting consistently less powerful. The younger Cloud threw all hard punches. The judges unanimously agreed that Cloud, the more raw, uneducated skilled but stronger and sharper fight was victorious. Johnson clearly displayed his incredible knowledge of the fight game, but his body could not keep up with his brain nor his much younger opponent. Cloud walked away still undefeated and with an incredible experience that greatly enhance his knowledge as he continues to prove himself at light heavyweight. It was a great, fan friendly fight to start the night off.
In the main event, hometown king Devon Alexander “The Great” defended his undefeated record and titles against European Andreas Kotelnik. With over 9,000 fans supporting him in his hometown, Alexander has proven that he is a huge draw and has an incredible future in the boxing world. Coming off an incredible, unreal performance against Juan Urango, Devon is seen to be a future pound for pound king. He is one of, if not the sharpest fighter in the 140 division. This was all said before his battle with Kotelnik.
Personally, I had not seen much of Kotelnik and was expecting an entertaining, but Alexander dominated performance. I feel slightly stupid but do not think I’m alone, when what I envisioned was completely erased as Kotelnik gave Alexander the fight of his life. Alexander seemed unstoppable before this fight. Although Alexander was victorious, Kotelnik exposed some of Alexander’s flaws. Alexander also looked stubborn and slightly out of it when he was in the corner, rolling his eyes and huffing and puffing. Luckily, this did not spill over into the ring as Alexander continuously dug deep and fought hard every second of every round. He would also fight more than his trainer, Kevin Cunningham wanted. Cunningham kept yelling to box Kotelnik.
Kotelnik presented a very defensive style that was very frustrating. He also landed some very big shots on Alexander. Alexander’s ring generalship and work rate is what propelled him to victory.
Alexander has a set of skills incomparable to anyone else in the division. He is a force to be reckoned with, even after his mediocre performance against Kotelnik.
It was a great night of fights, with two undefeated, rising stars walking away with big, hard earned V’s and another step towards the direction of greatness.
I was also not impressed by Alexander, He has speed but he’s not very accurate. Alexander threw alot of punches but most of them were hitting Kotelniks gloves. Kotelnik landed the cleaner harder punches and cleaner combos. Devon won that fight the same paul williams won a couple of his. Try to look good throughing alot of punches even though most of them are’nt really landing, then just hope something gets threw. I think Kotelnik won that fight or a least a draw.
I think Alexander is an over rated fighter .He wan’t impressive and way far from greatness .
His will never beat Khan or Bradly with this
performane .
His punched devoid of accuracy, power and speed.
I think Kotelnic was robbed big time .
I didn’t see anything exciting about Alexander .
tuff and real good fight. i just dont think alexander did enough to win that fight. i would say it was a gift. lucky that andreas didnt have a power punch cause alexander would of been ko. alexander vs dawson will be a gd fight.
