In a foul filled bantamweight tournament champion bout, undefeated Abner Mares barely made it past the resilient Joseph Agbeko. If you follow boxing, you should already know how horrible the fight was officiated. Russell Mora called low blows knockdowns, gave a handful of low blow warnings but no point off. Whether or not Mares would have won fair and square, unless there is a rematch (which everyone wants to see), we will always second guess this win to bad refereeing.
Mares looked good. Agbeko looked equally as good. Had that knockdown been ruled a low blow and a point taken away from Mares, who knows how the fight would’ve turned out.
Regardless, Mares was not making the calls, but fighting. Mares won, whether or not it was fair. Agbeko lost, and unfortunately, an L is an L. He no longer has his title. Thank you referee.
As far as our standings are affected, everyone had Mares winning some form of decision.
The standings.
1. Esteban 3-0 (+2)
Felipe 3-0 (+2)_
2. Michele 2-1(+2)
Rob 2-1(+2)
3. James 2-1 (+2)
4. Edgar 2-1 (+1)
Gabreal 2-1 (+1)
5. Aby 1-1 (+0)
I believe Agbeko deserves a rematch as do the fans. Boxing deserves to see Mora no more in high profile bouts.
Look out for predictions for next week. A double header- Andrade-Bundrage and Lundy-Diaz.
What do you guys think?
I live nearby the hometown of Mares, I always root for the hometown athletes so I am a Mares fan. Abner looked good in the fight despite the numerous low infractions that went unpunished. But when and if he is re-matched with Agbeko I don’t believe Mares will retain his title. I can picture Agbeko scoring with a-lot of right hands in a rematch, and also I think that Abner’s tendency to stray low with punches is really going to haunt him in future matches. And as for a match with Donaire, the Mares team needs to avoid that contest.
