Saturday night in front of a crowd of 4,812 in attendance at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. Adrien “The Problem” Broner kept his “0” (26-0) with his 5th round dismantling of the very game and entertaining Wales bred fighter Gavin “The Rock” Rees.
Broner who came into the ring rapping with his rap group Band Camp, showcased that while his rap career may not be as bright as his boxing career he can do both with the same amount of effort and swagger that boxing fans have come to love and hate.
“Any chance of Broner getting his ass kicked after that ring entrance.” was a text message I received from a boxing friend and on twitter Lou DiBella tweeted “Broner a terrific boxing talent, but as a rapper…Vanilla Ice isn’t worried.Just saying:)”
While Broner has shown that once he is alone in the ring, his skills are far superior than any of his previous 26 opponents. However his attitude and antics outside the ring are far from what some would call professional and from the consensus from fans on twitter, it tends to rub fans the wrong way. Add a somewhat unprofessional interview before the fight to his previous issues with weight and his general attitude in post fight interviews. While Broner may be trying to be funny when he gets on one knee and asks a women if she would “brush his hair” or telling Max Kellerman after the Rees fight that his best shot was “when he takes a picture” it seems to wane on boxings fans patience.
However, if fight fans are tired of the 23 year olds attitude now, the next decade may be more of the same and if Broner is copying his boxing legacy after that of Floyd Mayweather, then don’t get your hopes up he will tone down his attitude or fight the biggest names in the 140lb or any division. Broner is a Al Haymon fighter and Haymon and his team are the best at getting their fighters in the position of not having to walk through fire every fight and Broner is the next big thing. From a business point of view, there is nothing wrong with the way Broner is being handled but when Broner talks the way he does then fight fans expect him to back it up. However that would require Broner to jump up to 140lb and fight that likes of Brandon Rios, Lucas Matthysse, Danny Garcia and even Juan Manuel Marquez.
Don’t hold your breath. Broner is still only 23 and very few others than perhaps Canelo Alvarez, Broner is happy getting paid and fighting guys that he is a 80-1 favorite against. Eventually, Broner may fight the big names in the 140lb but only after they all beat each other up first. Perhaps I am wrong and Broner will choose to fight the best, but if his less than interested attitude when Robert Guerrero called him out in person is any indication; Broner will most likely face a Ricky Burns before a Matthysse or Garcia. Something Broner is more than okay with.
Ricky burns destroys him
FACT!!!
Broner is nothing but an HBO promoted fighter that has HBO’s VP of Boxing, Al Hayman.
We really don’t know how good he really is……fighting selected opponents that are matched well but are no danger…..Very skilled. In fight against Rees he was rather easy to hit…..however. Interesting to see if he can fight an A level fighter before HBO blows all their money on this one guy….so many other fights that can be made…don’t understand some of these matches.
This guy is a joke, telling max kellerman same sh1t different toilet. I wanna see him step up and fight Brandon rios
