It’s been two months since San Diego featherweight Aaron “El Gavilan” Garcia (10-1-2, 2KOs) made his triumphant ring return out-boxing Alejandro Lopez (20-2, 7KOs) in a four-round bout at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas and Garcia looks to knock another prospect off the block tomorrow night Friday, April 29 in Ontario, CA., in the co-feature of Thompson Boxing Promotions “New Blood” series. The main event pits California’s Mauricio “Maestro” Herrera (16-1, 7KOs) against Mexico’s Cristian “Filoso” Favela (28-32-7, 18KOs) in a junior welterweight clash.
If 28-year-old Aaron Garcia has his way it will be groundhog’s day, the only difference being the first name of his opponent in 23-year-old up and coming Abraham “Chamaco” Lopez (13-0, 10KOs) of La Puente, CA., in the eight-round featherweight semi-main event.
Garcia, of Vista, CA., beat Alejandro Lopez [not to be confused with upcoming opponent Abraham Lopez] by pressuring him with aggressiveness and work-rate while displaying superior boxing on the way to a four-round majority decision win, after not having fought for nearly two years.
With a “Gavilan” victory Friday over “Chamaco,” defeating two upstarts in a row from the outset of his resurgent career, Garcia would make a big statement while at the same time letting ‘all know’ he’s not a stepping stone but a serious threat to anybody.
Trainer Vince Parra conveys assurance when speaking of his talented charge, “Lopez is sharp, young, fast and strong with a good amateur background. He’s a good prospect. That being said, he’s in there with a guy [Garcia] who was what he was but at an even higher level at that age. Aaron had some ups-and-downs and took a little time off but he’s worked hard and refined his style. Added to the skills he already possessed things are coming together for him now and he’s looking like one of the best 126 pound guys out there. In closing Parra added, “Aaron’s going to take him to school.”
“I’m sure Lopez is coming to fight but I’m not worried about what he’s going to do because he’s not going to win Friday. I’m ready to fight and I’m going to come out victorious like I’ve been doing since the amateurs. I know how to win I’ve been doing it my whole life at every turn and that’s what I’m going to do come Friday night,” said the man himself [Aaron Garcia] days before the scrap.
Ontario, California bantamweight Jonathan “Lil’Thund’r” Arellano (7-0-1, KO) was slated to face Ernie Marquez but will now take on late replacement Shawn “Bones” Nichol (5-3, 5KOs) of Colorado. Marquez had to bow out due to a wrist injury suffered at his day job.
Also in action welterweight Alberto Herrera (7-2-1, 5KOs) of Riverside, will lock horns with East L.A.’s Aron Martinez (13-1-1, 3KOs).
Thompson Boxing Promotions “New Blood” series fistic action will take place at The Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California. Tickets for “NEW BLOOD” are priced at $75, $45 and $30. They are available now and may be purchased by calling 714-935-0900
