On Saturday night from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (48-2-2, 27KO’s) retained his title against England’s undefeated Darren Barker (23-1, 14KO’s) in an all toe to toe war. Martinez landed a short hook that sent Barker to the canvas. Barker could not regain his feet and was counted out at 1:29 of the eleventh round.
It appears Martinez’s nose was broken in the fourth round. His nose bled heavily thru out the rounds. Barker, 29, kept landing a right jab that almost broke Martinez defense but it was his power and the three and four punch flurries that left Barker covering up for most of the bout. Martinez was able to successfully defend his title for the third time. All three judges had Martinez ahead.
“I knew it would be this kind of fight,” Martinez said through an interpreter. “I planned for this. I always get a second wind. We train for that. It’s part of our game plan going in. We knew we would get stronger as the fight went on. I just kept throwing right hands because I knew sooner or later they would start landing.”
“I’ll fight anybody,” Martinez said, “as long as I can come to a good deal and so can my rival.”
Yeah I’m with you guys on that, Martinez is taking everybodys zeros away and you got to give him credit for that. I dont remember the last time I saw someone take on so many undefeated fighters and good ones too. I think he has a chance to take floyds if he can find the guts to fight him. Someone got to step up to the plate and give this guy a big fight, but they’er all running scared.
I agree, his one my fav fighters
i love watching this guy fight hes great. fights all the undefeated fighters much respect
