On July 23rd, we see a night of crossroads fight at the Mandalay Bay Events center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Zab Judah will be fighting Amir Khan for junior welterweight supremacy, Lamont Peterson will be facing Victor Cayo in the same weight division as the main event, in an eliminator bringing them one step closer to fighting the winner of the main event. Besides those two high profile fights, Tarvis Simms, who has 2 fights under his belt with Main Events steps up his opposition with hard hitting and undefeated Peter Quillen. The winner of that fight will move on to bigger and better things at the loaded 168division. Antwone Smith is scheduled to face Joel Julio in a welterweight showdown. This great match was scheduled earlier this year to be an ESPN Friday Night Fights headliner, but Smith pulled out suffering a training injury.

Smith and Julio are both contenders within the 147division. A win would catapult either one back towards the top of this division. Both have suffered losses that have setback their careers, but a win can revive either one and help put them back in the spotlight.

Tarvis Simms, whose biggest fight was a loss to Allen Green on short notice, has shown signs on talent in his recent matches against journeymen. Peter Quillin is no journeyman. He is a hard hitting, relentless boxer who is big for his size and the best opponent Simms will face to date. Quillin has been plagued with injury and promotional problems, is a very impressive boxer who hopefully will gain more recognition if he continues winning. Quillin has knockout power, and has seen some good opposition. Simms has aged and although he has more experience, is it enough to overcome the hunger of the younger, harder hitting Quillen?

Cayo, who has fought 2 tomato cans since his knockout loss to Marcos Maidana, will be facing Peterson, a slick boxer who has shown relative skill against top 140 pounders. This is an IBF eliminator; a belt that is being battled over in the main event. Although, right now, neither of these fighters seem to be on the same level as Khan or Judah, this fight can really increase their stock. This should be an entertaining fight to top off an already exciting undercard.

Khan, who had trouble getting Timothy Bradley in the ring with him, has settled to fight Zab Judah. Judah, who looked slick with slippery defense and knockout power in his fight against Kaizer Mabuza, Khan looked mediocre against his Paul McClosky. Judah is not McClosky. He is slick, hard to hit and a great counter puncher. He is experienced, with a new trainer, and faced greater opposition than Khan. The question is does he still have enough in the tank to beat a young, hot prospect. Khan has looked relatively good in his last fights, but is vulnerable. His chin is still suspect (as well as Judah) but his boxing skills and speed is definitely much improved. I believe whomever brings their A game, will be victorious.

Main Events, who knows how to develop stars, is putting a lot on the line by having Judah, Simms, and Julio all fighting risky fights on the same night. Golden Boy arealso have Quillin and Khan in risky fights. Main Events is in the very likely position of having at least 2 of their 3 fighters on the card winning big.

It is a great night and definitely a big night for a lot of fighters to step up and show the world that they are the next star in boxing.
