The former welterweight champion Zab Judah felt that $150,000 was not enough to step into the ring with former title contender Antonio “Toño” Diaz on the Mayweather-Marquez undercard scheduled for September 19th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.
Judah stated to various sources that the six figure amount was not enough to face the experienced Diaz and he added that he did not consider himself a welterweight.
Judah last stepped in the ring last November when he easily dispatched via a unanimous decision the San Diegan Ernest Johnson at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Diaz was able to beat the previously undefeated Javier “Zorro” Castro in his last bout which was held in Tijuana, MX, last March. Now a new opponent is in the works for Diaz.
In a recent Zab Judah video MyBoxingFans published, Zab Judah talked about how he allegedly turned down an offer to fight Shane Mosley on Dec.26 because he wasn’t pleased with what was offered to him.
Mosley and Richard Schaefer quickly responded.
“I just seen Zab last night at a club and he was pleading his case and why he said what he said,” stated Mosley. “I told him that I didn’t care and I told him I have to go out and find someone who wants to fight the Number 1 welterweight in the world.”
“There are a bunch of cowards out there who don’t want to fight. Everyone wants to say, ‘oh, there isn’t enough money’. Everybody has excuses, all these fighters are prima donnas who just want to fight for money. I’m a real fighter.”
Zab Judah and Mosley were scheduled to fight on a HBO pay-per-view last year but the fight was canceled when Judah fell through a shower door and required about 50 stitches.
“I just called Yoel and asked why Zab was not fighting Antonio Diaz,” said Schaefer. “I wanted to know what their plans were.”
Schaefer did confirm an offer of $350,000-$400,000 to fight Mosley but Yoel said, “No, no we would never fight Shane for that.”
“Judah was scheduled to make $1.5 million last year to fight Mosley, but that was more than a year ago and economic times have changed,” Schaefer said.
Sugar Shane Mosley will now fight Joshua Clottey of Accra, Ghana on Dec. 26 at a venue to be announced.
